Peace, be still!

 
 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side."  Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was.  And other little boats were also with Him.  And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.  But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow.  And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"  Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!"  And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?"  And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!"

Yesterday we read that Jesus continued in His preaching of parables, after giving the parable of the Sower.  He said, "Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed?  Is it not to be set on a lampstand?  For there is nothing hidden which will not be reveled, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.  If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."  Then He said to them, "Take heed what you hear.  With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.  For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him."  And He said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he  himself does not know how.  For the earth yields crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head.  But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come." Then He said, "To what shall we liken the kingdom of God?  Or with what parable shall we picture it?  It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade."  And with may such parable He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.  But without a parable He did not speak to them.  And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.   
 
  On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side."  Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was.  And other little boats were also with Him.  And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.  But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow.  And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"  Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!"  And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?"  And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!"  My study Bible comments that Christ's mastery over creation is one more sign that He is the Messiah, and is divine.  Commands to the wind and the sea can only be issued by God (Job 38:8-11; Psalm 66:5-6, 107:29).  He was asleep because He is both human and divine, and as a man, Christ needed rest.  In the Incarnation, He assumed all the natural actions of the flesh, and sleep is one of those.  This image of Christ and His disciples in a boat is traditionally used to illustrate the Church, my study Bible tells us.  It says that God both permits storms and delivers us through them, so that we can see God's protection more clearly.  Jesus' rebuke of the storm is also an icon, or illustration of His calming the tempests in the souls of human beings.  
 
This image of Christ and the disciples on the boat is quite an interesting one.  Again, as my study Bible commented, it functions as an icon of the Church.  The stern of a boat is at the rear, so in this scene Christ is not guiding the boat nor giving commands for where to go.  Not only is He in the rear of the boat, but He's in a place where things would be stored (such as the pillow on which He sleeps, or possibly fishing nets).  It's a particular image for us of the times we feel that God is not awake to our peril or circumstances, neither does God seem to be actively guiding us through them.  At those times, like the disciples, we might ask the same question, "Don't You care?" ("Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?")  There are those who believe that the world or cosmos was created by God but then works on its own, without influence or energies of the presence of God with us and active in our lives.  But, aside from an indication that indeed, Jesus was fully human and so needed His sleep, this story tells us quite the opposite.  It seems to say that Christ had such confidence in the directions He's given the disciples prior to their crossing of the Sea of Galilee that He must ask them, "Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?"  This tells us something powerful about how we're to live our faith, in the confidence of what we've been taught and known, and in trusting Christ's commands given to us for how we're to live our lives.  All that we've been taught, and all that we know, from His teachings in the Gospels, through St. Paul and all the saints, the traditions of the Church, and the countless faithful who have come before us and will come after walk in a faith that is all about trust in the One from whom we've been given all things.  This isn't trust in some distant, unseeing, hands-off God we don't know.  It is trust in the One who came to be one of us, lived with us, crossed this sea with the disciples, and slept in the back of the boat through a windstorm on the sea that frightened these seasoned fishermen for whom this sea is home territory.  For Christ is God with us, in our faith, our worship and prayers, and the communion of the saints, in our liturgies and Scripture and the gospel message we're given.  In the efforts of these men who strain at rowing on the sea and who would follow in carrying the gospel message to the world, so we are carried also as we trust in the only One who may truly command peace.

Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch

 
 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.  Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land.  And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.  When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."  But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net."  And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.  So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.  And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.  When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"  For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid.  From now on you will catch men."  So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

Yesterday we read that, after preaching there, Jesus arose from the synagogue in Capernaum and entered Simon's house.  But Simon's wife's mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her.  So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.  And immediately she arose and served them.  When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.  And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!"  And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.  Now when it was day, He departed and went to a deserted place.  And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; but He said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent."  And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
 
 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.  My study Bible explains that the Lake of Gennesaret is also known as the Sea of Galilee.  It is about 13 miles long and 7 miles wide.  
 
 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land.  And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.  My study Bible explains that sitting was the traditional position for a teacher.  Some early Christian preachers, such as St. John Chrysostom, sat while the people stood.  In Matthew 5:1, Jesus is described as "seated" just before He begins to preach the Sermon on the Mount to His disciples.  

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."  My study Bible tells us that St. Ambrose sees a spiritual meaning in the command to launch out into the deep, as an invitation to give one's life over to the deep mystery of the knowledge of the Son of God.  
 
 But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net."  And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.  So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.  And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.  My study Bible comments here that the Lord draws people to Himself by things which are familiar to them.  As He drew the Magi with a star (Matthew 2:2), as He would draw tax collectors by a tax collector (Luke 5:29), here Christ draws the fishermen with fish (see 1 Corinthians 9:19-23).  
 
 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"  My study Bible says that Peter's cry in the face of divine power is not a rejection of Jesus (contrast this to Luke 8:37).  Rather, he suddenly sees himself in the light of Christ.  My study Bible explains that holy people such as Peter become keenly aware of their own unworthiness (compare Isaiah 6:5; Revelation 1:17). 

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid.  From now on you will catch men."  So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.  My study Bible explains that the great catch of fish is an image of the apostles, who bring mankind to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and it fulfills the prophecy of Jeremiah 16:16.  In the Eastern Orthodox festal hymn of Pentecost, it is sung, "Through the fishermen, You drew the world into Your net."
 
There are a few interesting elements in today's reading which we might call poetic.  It is something of the poetry of Scripture, or perhaps we might simply say the poetry of God.  First of all, the text says that they are at the Lake of Gennesaret, where Simon Peter has his boat, and is fishing along with James and John Zebedee.  The etymology of the word Gennesaret is disputed and unclear. But many suggest that the basis for the name is a word for "garden."  Some say it means possibly, "garden of the Prince," or suggestive of Paradise (long associated with a beautiful garden).  The Lake of Gennesaret (also known as the Sea of Galilee) overlooks a very fertile plain called the plain of Gennesaret.  This area was known for its abundance:  abundant fertility and variety of crops, good soil and conditions for growth, as well as the abundance of fish the lake provided here.  So, all of this combines with the poetic imagery of the disciples whom Jesus says will become fishers of men.  They will go out to bring an abundant harvest, an abundant catch, symbolized in the great catch of fish in their nets, and they bear the kingdom of heaven with them, the "Paradise" suggested in the name and the abundant beauty and fertility of this region, evidently great conditions for the sustaining of human life.  Think of the impossibly great multiples of faithful created through this beginning of Christ's ministry and this handful of early disciples.   Finally we come to the end of our reading, in which we're told that these early disciples brought their boats to land, and then forsook all and followed Him.  We know they were already disciples before this point (in yesterday's reading, we read how Jesus came to Peter's house, and healed his mother-in-law of a fever).  But now they are called by Christ to a new life, a new métier, a new way of life and work to do, so they forsake all and follow Him.  When we think of that net full of fish to the point of breaking, the boats full to the point of sinking, we can think of this fertile plain, and the surprising variety of crops that grew together, usually requiring varying conditions, because that is what the future Church would look like.  That abundance of the fish is the abundance of the countless number of people since who have come to know Christ because of the apostles.  These men, too, will give it their "all," for they have been called, and they will respond, nearly all of them holding nothing back, including even the sacrifice of their lives.  Jesus told them to "launch out into the deep," and so they have -- deepening their faith, moving toward the deeper mysteries of God, and expanding their commitment more deeply into their hearts and lives.

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel

 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.  

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."   And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

 In yesterday's reading, we started Mark's Gospel:  The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  As it is written in the Prophets: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You." "The voice of one crying in the wilderness:  'Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.'"  John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.  Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.  Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.  I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."  It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.  Then a voice came from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."  Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. 
 
  Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  My study Bible tells us that Mark's written emphasis on John being put in prison before Jesus begins preaching reveals that a key purpose of the old covenant -- preparing the people for Christ -- had been completed (Galatians 4:1-5).   As Christ has come, the time of preparation was fulfilled.  My study Bible explains that to repent is to do a total "about-face."  We noted in yesterday's reading that in Greek this word literally means to "change one's mind."   This is a radical change of one's spirit, mind, thought, and heart.  My study Bible calls it a complete reorientation to a life centered in Christ.  Let us also add that this is a lifelong process.   Just as the stories of the Bible indicate, our faith is a journey; Christ is "the way" (from a word that means "road" in Greek).  Our faith is always called to grow and deepen; we are always called to bear fruits worthy of repentance, the spiritual fruit of faith (Galatians 5:22-23).

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.   If we look at the Gospel of John, we know that these first disciples had already heard the preaching of John the Baptist (John 1:35-50).  They were thus prepared to accept Christ immediately.  Although they were illiterate and unlearned in religion, my study Bible explains, these "people of the land" whom Jesus calls will be revealed at Pentecost to be the wisest of all.

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."   And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.  My study Bible points out that the word immediately occurs nearly forty times in Mark's Gospel, and nearly all of these occur before the Lord's entrance into Jerusalem.  This sense of urgency and purpose as Christ journeys toward Jerusalem to fulfill His mission of redeeming the world helps make Mark's Gospel not only the shortest, but also the most direct of the four Gospels.  

If we look closely at the text of today's reading, we see an element which is not necessarily obvious but it teaches us something important.  Jesus begins His ministry, taking up from where the last and greatest in the line of the Old Testament type prophets, John the Baptist, has come preparing people for this Kingdom (see yesterday's reading, above).  At that time, Jesus declares to all, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  Again, as explained in our commentary from yesterday, "gospel" (εὐαγγέλιον/evangelion), literally meaning "good news," was a quite commonly known term in the empire of Christ's time, in the Greek that formed the lingua franca, or international language of His time.  It was the title for the various missives sent across the empire by the Emperor, setting out plans and policies or declaring news of victorious battles.  So when Christ teaches to believe in the gospel, it is emphasizing this sense of a kingdom which is at hand, present to the people.  This is not the kingdom of Herod and his descendants, nor the empire of Caesar, but the kingdom of God -- which remains to us present and at hand (Matthew 18:20; Luke 17:20-21).  This kingdom is present with Christ, for as St. Paul taught the Athenians about the "unknown god," Jesus Christ, "He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being" (see Acts 17:26-28).   But, if we read a little further, we see that, similarly to the kingdoms of the world, this Kingdom also has its battles with an enemy (see the parable of the Wheat and the Tares).  But this is a spiritual battleground.  Jesus' first act after calling disciples and entering the synagogue to preach, is to encounter an unclean spirit.  The spirit challenges Christ, informing us about this battle and Christ's spiritual authority, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"   The people respond, astonished at this evidence of what is unseen, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  Our faith does depend upon understanding that we are always in a kind of a struggle, just as Christ's testing in the wilderness for forty days did as the first act of the Spirit after His Baptism (again, see yesterday's reading, above).  So we must not be dismayed or disheartened in the times when we go through our own struggles with faith, when our common assumptions and ways of thinking, or the hurtful things of this world, come to challenge us.  Just as the Crucifixion remains the greatest paradox of transfiguration by Christ's ministry and presence, with the figure of the Cross being the sign of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:30), so we should remember that we are taught we each have our own unique cross to bear into the world, and this is always an element of our lives.  The work of faith is to transfigure this world, with the presence of the kingdom of God, which is always "at hand."   Through our own lives of faith as His disciples, suffering becomes transfigured with meaning when challenges are met with the help that is always spiritually present to us even if we feel alone.  For the Cross means that the power of Resurrection is present and with us, despite the darkness (John 1:5).  This is the mystery of the kingdom of God and God's grace.  Let us call on the resources we have and look to His light.  Modern life seems to challenge us with expectations of easy happiness, guaranteed through some sort of acquisition of material goods, or new inventions -- perhaps a new identity, a new change in our appearance.  But the wisdom of our faith teaches us something much greater than such a limited, and misleading perspective.  It gives us what is eternal and abiding, and therefore true.  But it calls us into a dynamic that will involve every aspect of life, "in which we live and move and have our being."  That is the kingdom of God, always at hand.

 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.  Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's and asked him to put out a little from the land.  And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.   The Lake of Gennesaret is also known as the Sea of Galilee, which indeed is truly a very large lake.  Possibly this name is used here in the context of the story as Gennesaret was a name that holds the meaning of a type of garden (possibly meaning "princely gardens").  The entire region was understood as extremely fertile agriculturally, as well as for its abundance of fish, germane to today's reading.  Note that the text tells us that Jesus sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.  Sitting was the traditional position for an authoritative  Jewish teacher.  My study Bible remarks that some early Christian preachers, such as St. John Chrysostom, sat while the people stood.

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid.  From now on you will catch men."  So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.  My study Bible says that the great catch of fish is an image of the apostles bringing humankind to the knowledge of Jesus Christ.  Moreover, it fulfills the prophecy of Jeremiah 16:16.  In the festal hymn of Pentecost, the Orthodox sing, "Through the fishermen, You drew the world into Your net."  Note that the text says that they forsook all and followed Him.  They respond with full hearts; they are all in.
 
Jesus "brings in" these first disciples through the extraordinary catch of fish in the place He told them to put down their nets.  It is enough for Simon Peter to understand Christ's holiness, and indeed to call Him "Lord."  John's Gospel tells us that these first disciples were earlier introduced to Christ through the preaching of John the Baptist (John 1:35-42).   So we may assume that although this is the first encounter mentioned in Luke's Gospel (after the healing of Peter's mother-in-law in Saturday's reading),  Peter, James, and John already knew who Jesus was and had certainly heard His preaching.  But when this extraordinary catch of fish happens for them, it reveals to Peter a deep truth he was somehow prepared to accept.  It is not some sort of "proof" that compels him to faith, or simply dazzles him with astonishment.  It serves as a sign of truth which prompted something in him that was already seeking, and prepared to be kindled by faith.  We can learn from his response what it is to truly respond to a revelation, a sign of something present, and to recognize that presence through the kindling of honest faith.  His astonished response, so typical of this earnest if not always prudent apostle, gives us the truth of what type of man he is, and what is in his heart.  He feels his whole self revealed to Christ, even as Christ is -- through his capacity for faith -- revealed to him.  This kind of "naked" revelation of his soul in the light of Christ is what prompts his response to Jesus.  It is Peter's own awareness of his sinfulness, his imperfection, that he becomes aware of.   Peter's absolute honesty and recognition of himself in that light becomes a testimony to his capacity for faith, another revelation of what kind of man he is, and why he becomes the apostle we know.  These three -- Peter, James, and John -- will become Christ's closest inner circle, the ones with the faith He most relies upon throughout His ministry.  When Jesus goes up on the Mount of Transfiguration, it is Peter, James, and John whom He takes with Him (Luke 9:28-36).  When He prays before His Passion in the garden of Gethsemane, it is Peter, James, and John upon whom He calls to stay with Him and pray (Matthew 26:35-46).  None of these disciples does everything perfectly when asked by Jesus on these occasions (there is a lot of sleep involved when things are overwhelming for them).  It is during the time in Gethsemane when Jesus tells Simon (Peter), "The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Matthew 26:41).  But it is from encounters such as the one in today's reading that we understand Jesus calls those whose spirit is willing, and knows who they are, for they respond with something deep inside of themselves that is the root of faith.  Let us keep in mind that He will give Simon the name Peter ("Rock"), for the rock of faith upon which the Church will be built, expressed in Peter's confession (Matthew 16:13-20).  For now, let us understand that the recognition with which Simon responds to Christ in today's reading is a sign of that capacity for faith, a deep response that grasps at the true meaning in the abundance of faith.  For He calls those upon whom He seeks to rely for the growth of that faith, and discipleship, and we may well also become fishers of men like they do.

Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him

 
 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum.  And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.  Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.  So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.  But He said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."  Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.  

On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone -- however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks -- when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.  And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?"  Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.  Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."

Yesterday we read that Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.  Then a  great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased.  And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.  Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.  Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?"  But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.  Philip answered Him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little."  One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?"  Then Jesus said, "Make the people sit down."  Now there was much grass in the place.  So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.  And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted.  So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost."  Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.  Then these men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world."  Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
 
 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum.  And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.  Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.  So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.  But He said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."  Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.  In yesterday's reading (see above) we were told that it is the time of the Passover.  We have noted that John's chapter 6 contains parallels to the story of the Passover and Exodus of Israel from Egypt (Exodus 11 - 17).  This miracle of Christ walking on the sea is the fifth sign of seven recorded in John's Gospel.  In the Exodus, Moses leads the people across the Red Sea, walking on dry ground in the midst of the water, my study Bible reminds us (Exodus 14:15-31).  Here Christ sends His disciples across the sea and then walks on the sea as if it were dry ground.  

On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone -- however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks -- when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.  And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?"  Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.  Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."  The people who got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus, are the same people who wanted to take Him by force and make Him king in yesterday's reading (above).  Jesus had left them when He understood this, and gone to the mountain alone, presumably to pray.  
 
In today's reading, Jesus notes the people's motive in following after Him, and seeking to make Him king:  "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled."  This offers also a kind of explanation as to why being taken and made king by force is unsuitable to His mission:  they simply seek Him because they ate of the loaves and were filled.  Jesus wants people to seek Him not for some sort of material gratification, or because He promises us an easy life without work, but because the signs He performs are signals of the presence of the kingdom of God.  He wants those who will seek Him because they seek this Kingdom, and the life of the Kingdom it offers to us.  He says to the people who seek Him, "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."  Once again, as we have noted in the past several readings, Jesus makes the connection between food and labor.  In His encounter with the Samaritan woman, Jesus told His disciples, after they encouraged Him to eat, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work" (see this reading).  In this sense, Jesus' statement asks us to think for ourselves about what work would "feed" us, feed our souls and spirits, giving us a sense of sustenance and satisfaction.  Here Jesus directly tells the people (and therefore us) what we should "labor" for, what food will truly sustain us and feed us, which endures to everlasting life which only Christ can give us, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.  Everything is related, and begins with Christ's relationship with the Father -- the Father who gives Christ the works to finish that He does to begin with.  We can see how the feeding of the five thousand men (and more women and children) "feeds" into a Eucharistic sense of communion, of how all is connected through Father and Son (and Spirit) and through us.  This food that feeds us is given by Father through Son and in the Spirit, but it also includes the works in which we may join in this Kingdom, the food of the Eucharist, and the communion that is inseparable from the everlasting life of which Jesus speaks.  Here in today's reading, Jesus is not simply giving us a direct appeal, but rather a direct command:  "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."   This does not mean we're never supposed to think about putting food on the table or how our families will survive.  What it does tell us about is what comes first.  We first think about the kingdom of God, we first place ourselves in relation to that which supersedes the other in power and in lasting impact:  the food which endures to everlasting life.  And we place all things under that priority, including our orientation to what we work for:  what it is we are willing to put all our efforts and energy into.  Jesus asks us to consider what is more consequential and what will pay us a true lasting dividend that won't perish.  It's akin to His command to "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" (see Matthew 6:32-34).  It stands to reason that if Jesus had not understood perfectly well that people need food for physical sustenance, He would not have given us this fourth sign of John's Gospel, the feeding of the five thousand.  If He didn't understand our human need for physical security, we would not be given this fifth sign in John's Gospel, Jesus walking on the water to His disciples in the middle of a stormy sea, and telling them (and us), "It is I; do not be afraid."   But His concern is what we put as top priority  -- what we put first, that we understand what that priority must be, how its surpassing value makes it worthy of our efforts, beyond that of the food which perishes.

Peace, be still!


 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side."  Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was.  And other little boats were also with Him.  And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.  But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow.  And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"  Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!"  And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?"  And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!"

Yesterday we read that Jesus taught, "Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed?  Is it not to be set on a lampstand?  For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.  If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."  Then He said to them, "Take heed what you hear.  With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.  For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him."   And He said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.  For the earth yields crops by itself:  first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head.  But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."  Then He said, "To what shall we liken the kingdom of God?  Or with what parable shall we picture it?  It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade."  And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.  But without a parable He did not speak to them.  And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.

 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side."  Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was.  And other little boats were also with Him.  And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.  But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow.  And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"  Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!"  And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?"  And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!"  My study bible emphasizes Christ's mastery over creation on display in today's reading.  This is another sign that He is the Messiah and is divine.  To command the sea and the waves is possible only for God (Job 38:8-11; Psalm 65:5-6, 106:9).  Jesus' humanity is also on display:  He was asleep because as human being, He needed rest.  In the Incarnation, Jesus assumes all the natural actions of the flesh -- one of which is sleep.  The image of Christ and His disciples in a boat is also classically used to illustrate the Church.  My study bible says that "God both permits storms and delivers us through them," so that we can see God's protection more clearly.  The rebuke of the storm by Christ also illustrates His capacity for calming the tempests in the human soul.

In certain ways, today's passage is a perfect illustration of setting out on a road to expansion in a personal sense.  Jesus tells the disciples, "Let us cross over to the other side" of the Sea of Galilee.  These are experienced fishermen with Him; Peter and Andrew and James and John Zebedee were professional fishermen when they became followers of Christ.  Moreover, the Sea of Galilee is their home.  Their whole lives have been spent on its shore and working in its waters.  But the wind and the waves of this storm terrify even them; all of the men in the boat clearly fear they are about to die.  In the course of Jesus' ministry, it's the first time they're setting out into uncharted waters, so to speak.  They've spent their time among peoples that are known to them, territories more or less close to home or at least familiar.  The Sea of Galilee isn't really a sea at all but a very large freshwater lake, about 13 miles long by 8 miles wide.  But it was home to many peoples and cultures, which included Greek and Roman influence.  For the first time, Jesus commands the disciples now that they must sail across the sea to the other side, and they will encounter there something entirely different and unusual.  But in the setting off in the dark across unfamiliar waters, and sailing into a storm, we find a perfect metaphor for the times in our own lives when we are challenged to learn something bigger and deeper than we've encountered before.  God challenges us to expand ourselves not with simple and easy tasks, but with tasks that involve risk and adventure, upsets and even frightening obstacles.  Usually we may encounter right away the fears that come to us when we set about doing something brand new.  Let us take note that this storm is very real; it's not an illusion and its not a hallucination.  It's not merely a fear, but rather a fear manifesting before them and surrounding them with things that are truly threatening.  But it's faith that has to go the way here, and it's faith that leads the way.  They would not be here unless Christ had commanded it.  In my experience, God does lead us into the place where we need healing, where life isn't really something we've mastered and understand well.  In other words, into places where we've got something to learn -- and where we need to learn it the right way, God's way.  We'll be led into places where our faith can shine a light in us, and faith itself will be tested and must be relied upon.  Life is a journey, and our faith the journey into it, more deeply.  Faith also commands that we be healed ourselves, in whatever ways may be necessary.  These are journeys we can't pretend to know for ourselves, because they are always to places we haven't explored, into which we need to expand and to grow, and within which we may need correction, healing, transcendence of our own self-imposed or worldly limits.  In particular, our own fears will be confronted.  When our fears are raised, our assumptions challenged, it's time to turn to God, to prayer, to find the way through.  Nothing may be what we've predicted, but that's the nature of life, the nature of change, and the only path to healing and growth.  It's God's love we find along the way, the and trust (faith) we place in that love.   In the Greek, Christ's command, "Peace, be still!" is more literally translated as demanding silence and commanding that the storm "muzzle" itself.   It is Christ whose true peace we need, which demands quiet and commands the threatening roar to cease.
