They brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them

 
 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.  He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.  
 
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.  Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.  Great multitudes followed Him -- from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.

Yesterday we read that when Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, / By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, / Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."  From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.  Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.  Great multitudes followed Him -- from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.  My study Bible says that we should note that these crowds do not swarm Jesus when He commands repentance (as in yesterday's reading; see the final verse, above), but only as He begins to heal and work miracles.  This fact, it says, shows that the people misunderstand the true nature of His Kingdom.  It also shows Christ's concession, according to Theopylact, "to give credibility to what He teaches" among the fickle multitudes.  
 
Jesus reveals the presence of the Kingdom with Him in the healings that He does.  He heals diseases and torments, epilepsy, paralysis, and of course this goes hand in hand with casting out demons from those who were possessed.  This is all an expression of the Kingdom very present with Him, and of course, a manifestation of His power and authority in His identity as Son.  But, as we discussed in yesterday's reading and commentary, all the things that Christ is, and that entire presence of the Kingdom that encompasses all that He teaches and will do, including even Judgment, are part and parcel of what comes with Christ.  We can pick and choose healing, or casting out demons, but we can't leave out repentance, for this is basic and fundamental to His gospel message.  It is a sad and tragic thing when people suffer; when they suffer from diseases that afflict in terrible ways, when people die.  These things are "not fair."   In the historical understanding of the Church, these afflictions are a part of the effects of sin in the world, and that includes death and all that comes with it.  But each one of us will contend with death in one way or another, and what that means is that the ways in which we meet death, or any of the varied forms of death we encounter in life, such as illness and suffering, injustice, and the entire gamut of myriad things that are detrimental to life, must first of all be the encounter with Christ.  He is the One who transfigured death on the Cross, defeated it, but in His suffering created meaning and purpose.  We also, turning to Him in our distress, must meet all of our suffering and ailments with Him, and the fullness of what He is and teaches us.  Many people look to the amazing healings described in the Gospels and think that prayer's effectiveness is only about those times of trouble we have and the banishing of that trouble, like using a magic wand to fix our problems, or saying particular words that will have this effect.  Some see Christ's preaching as teaching us that all we have to do is believe that we have what we want, and call on His name, and it will be manifest.  But this is not the fullness of His ministry and message.  Even St. Paul writes that he had to accept an affliction, for he had received so many blessings and revelations, and been granted so many graces by God that, as he says, "a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure."  Praying about this "thorn in the flesh," this "messenger of Satan," he was told by God, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."  Can we, in our quest for healing, accept what St. Paul says here?  That his own thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, was allowed intentionally for the greater glory of God, that his weakness was in fact a way through which God's strength is made perfect?  How many of us can accept so fully this gospel that we could meet our own afflictions this way, finding meaning and even intention and purpose in our suffering?  But St. Paul met his suffering in prayer, and embraced the message that God had for him.  He concludes, "Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong" (see 2 Corinthians 12:7-10).  It is a healthy and good thing to seek life, to reject death in all its forms, and to find the good and abundant reality of creation which God has given us and of which we are a part.  But when we substitute something else, an idol even of something nominally good, for the fullness of Christ and the meanings and grace to be found in the transfiguration of life possible through faith, then we're missing the mark -- we're failing to find what God has in mind for us and the beauty therein.  None of us wants to suffer; even more so, none wants to see their loved ones suffer in any way.  The mother of God, Mary, comes to mind when we think of her watching her Son suffer and die.  This kind of agony we wish upon no one.  And yet, she accepted God's reality for her; it was her faith that guided her response to even the worst cruelties of life.  These things are also great and profound mysteries; they are difficult to fathom, more difficult even to see when we are in distress.  But prayer will see us through them, even in the times when God's grace must be sufficient for us, when God's strength is made perfect in our weakness, or that of someone we love.  An acceptance of the potentials of meaning even within suffering shifts our perspective to one of compassion, and transcendence.  We find a dignity in forbearance but most of all in our capacity for care in the midst of imperfection, a beauty in seeing the grace that is still possible in the expression of faith and of love and the strength made perfect in weakness.  For we are on a journey to God which takes us through all kinds of things in life, even the sad things of this world.  Let us find His way and the comfort in His easy yoke, and light burden (Matthew 11:20).

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand

 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."
 
 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him. 
 
Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught  them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  
 
Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

 Yesterday we began reading the Gospel of St. Mark:  The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  As it is written in the Prophets: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You."  "The voice of one crying in the wilderness:  'Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.' "  John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins.  Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.  I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."  It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was  baptized by John in the Jordan.  And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.  Then a voice came from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."  Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days,  tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.
 
  Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  My study Bible comments that Mark's written emphasis on John being put in prison before Jesus begins preaching reveals that a key purpose of the old covenant, preparing people for Christ, had been completed (Galatians 4:1-5).  Once Christ had come into the world, the time of preparation was fulfilled.  To repent, my study Bible explains, is to do a total "about-face."  This word in Greek (μετανοια/metanoia) literally means to "change one's mind."  To repent means a radical change of spirit, mind, through, and heart.  That is, a complete reorientation to a life centered in Christ.  This is an ongoing, continuing lifetime effort, not a one-time decision.  
 
  And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.   The first disciples of Jesus had already heard the preaching of John the Baptist, and so they were prepared to accept Christ immediately (see John 1:29-51).  My study Bible comments that although they were illiterate and unlearned in religion, these "people of the land" called by Jesus will be revealed at Pentecost to be the wisest of all.
 
 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught  them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.   My study Bible asks us to note that the word immediately occurs almost forty times in St. Mark's Gospel, and nearly all of these occur before the Lord's entrance into Jerusalem.  This sense of urgency and purpose as Christ journeys toward Jerusalem in order to fulfill His mission of redeeming the world, it says, helps to make St. Mark's account not only the shortest, but also the most direct of the four Gospels.  Let us note that Christ's preaching (and healing as per the verses that follow) begins on the Sabbath, which will be His practice through His ministry.  My study Bible cites St. Ambrose of Milan, who comments that thus "the new creation began where the old creation ceased."  Jesus speaks with authority, and thereby astonishes the people, as He contrasts with the scribes.  That is, unlike the prophets of old and the teachers of His day who taught in the third person ("The Lord says"), my study Bible explains, Christ taught in the first person ("I say to you").  See also Matthew 5.
 
 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.  As Jesus performs this exorcism, He commands the unclean spirit to "Be quiet . . . !"  This begins to teach us about what is called the "Messianic Secret."  My study Bible comments that Our Lord's refusal to fully disclose His identity as Messiah is foreseen by Isaiah (Isaiah 42:1-4).  It notes the following reasons for secrecy:  First, the growing hostility of the Jewish leaders.  Second, the people's misunderstanding of the Messiah as an earthly, political leader.  Finally, the Lord's desire is to evoke genuine faith which is not based only on marvelous signs.  
 
 In St. Mark's Gospel, as my study Bible comments, the word immediately occurs nearly forty times, almost each one before Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem.  It notes that this seemingly conveys the great urgency and purpose of Jesus' mission.  Given that we understand that Christ's public ministry began when He was thirty years old, we might question why He seemingly waited so long.  If this mission was that urgent, if the power of God at work was going to be so explosively fast in some sense, why did He not start earlier as a younger Man?  Why did no one else know this -- except possibly His mother?  See John 2:1-12; also Luke 1, 2; Matthew 2).  It's important also, in this context, to note how St. Mark is careful (as my study Bible points out) to say that St. John the Baptist was arrested first, prior to Jesus' public ministry of preaching and teaching in the synagogues on the Sabbath.  So these things both point toward a similar conclusion, that with God, we could say, timing is everything.  Jesus begins today's reading by declaring, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand."  Christ's mission and urgency is deliberate, just as His choosing to publicly preach and teach begins carefully after St. John the Baptist's ministry, after Christ's Baptism by John, and the revelation of the Holy Trinity which took place at that event (see yesterday's reading, above).  While we could make the mistake of saying that these things happen this way "because it was prophesied" (which it was), we'd be better off understanding that the prophecy is a gift from God revealing what things would be:  that there first would be one who was the messenger of the Messiah, His herald, who would be a "voice crying in the wilderness" (see Malachi 3:1; Isaiah 40:3).  But the timing and planning of such things does not occur because they were prophesied, but because those who fulfill the prophecies are acting in accordance with the Holy Spirit, obeying the will of God as they are given that -- and, in particular, we note for this topic, in the time it is given to them to do so.  Jesus, we observe, spends much time in prayer, and in particular just prior to new directions that occur in His ministry.  He does not immediately go to Jerusalem and announce Himself to the world as the Messiah, even though this is the truth about Him.  Neither does He spend time making this declaration in public during His ministry.  Everything must unfold in a particular way -- and in this context, we come to the Messianic Secret.  My study Bible has given reasons (see above) for this secret, and why Christ's ministry must evolve in the way that it does.  This understanding of the Messianic Secret is an important component in the story we read in St. Mark's Gospel, and we must also keep it in mind.  Rather than declaring Himself to be the Messiah, the unclean demon in today's story declares who Christ is:  "I know who you are -- the Holy One of God!"  It's almost as if the unclean spirit didn't quite perceive this until Jesus was right there in the synagogue with the person out of whom would come that spirit.  This strange limitation of the unclean spirits is something to consider in the story of Jesus, and especially in the power of the Crucifixion, death, and Resurrection to defeat Satan.  But this, also, is part of the importance of God's time, and how things evolve in the Gospel stories, and in the stories of the Church that would follow, such as in the Book of Acts of the Apostles.  In Ecclesiastes 3, we read a consideration of the mystery of God's unfolding work, and of the importance of time, "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven."  In 2nd Corinthians, St. Paul quotes from the prophecy of Isaiah:  "In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you" (2 Corinthians 6:2; Isaiah 49:8).  In urging the Corinthian believers to be true to Christ and to make important choices now necessary, St. Paul tells them, "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation."  In St. Luke's Gospel, Jesus begins preaching in His hometown of Nazareth by reading from the prophecy of Isaiah:  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind,to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord" (Luke 4:16-21; Isaiah 61:1-2).  Let us note that in all of these circumstances we can discuss, of Christ's ministry and its various turning points, in beginning His public ministry, and even the beginning and end of the ministry of St. John the Baptist, the timing for each is essential to God's purpose and the proper carrying out and evolution of such missions.  For the purpose of the time of our lives is, in effect, to dedicate our use of time -- in addition to all else -- to God, to seek God's purposes and God's "acceptable" time.  The mission and ministry of Jesus bears that out, the Church bears that out.  The seeking of God's will and guidance cannot be separate from our understanding of the proper use of our time.  For that, we always turn to prayer, for our lives can't properly be lived, in this sense, without it.  What is appropriate at one time and for one person may not be God's calling for another.  Let us be immediate in seeking to fulfill God's purpose, in God's acceptable time, as best we can discern.

Christ's casting out of the unclean demon is a sign of the spiritual warfare that is always going on unseen by us on worldly terms.  But this is yet another expression of an idea we explored in yesterday's reading, in which Christ's temptation in the wilderness served as a picture of the world.  Yesterday, we quoted from my study Bible, which noted that the wilderness (into which Christ was "thrown" by the Holy Spirit to be tempted by Satan) is a battleground, an image of the world, both the dwelling place of demons and a source of divine tranquility and victory.  Here, Christ's first bold public act is the casting out of a demon, an exorcism.  We should note that the demon knows full well who Christ truly is, "the Holy One of God!"  It gives us a clue about the demonic, that demons do not act out of ignorance, as human beings so often do, and it gives us a clue about judgment, and the time that we human beings are given in this world for repentance.  In essence, right from the beginning, Christ's Incarnation, and of course His public ministry, is all about revelation, exposing or uncovering the spiritual reality of the kingdom of heaven in our midst, but also of the demonic at work.  So, we should not be surprised that as persons and communities we so often find ourselves torn between these choices that can't really reconcile with one another.  So often we seek a compromise in our lives, but when challenges to our faith arise there are times when we simply cannot cross that line.  Thus the history of Christianity is filled with martyrs and confessors, those who have suffered for their faith.  When Jesus teaches (as we shall read) with such drastic sayings such as, "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it" (Mark 8:35), or "He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me" (Matthew 10:37), He's talking about the times when we must make such choices.  Perhaps He puts it into clear context when He says, "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon" (Matthew 6:24).  The demons have chosen one way, a rebellion against God, and they have done so within an entirely different context than straying human beings, for they are not human.  We, on the other hand, as human beings are born into a world where we must make choices often as steps to learn, one way or the other, from our mistakes and failures, but also from the joy that comes from serving the Lord, and the peace we may find therein.  We must pause to reflect that in the Greek, the word for "disciple" literally means "learner," and this greatly differentiates us from the demons.  Time is an important concept of our identities as human beings, for it is this living in time, moment to moment, which gives us the sense in which life is a journey, but in spiritual terms for us, it is a journey of the capacity for repentance, to change, to change our minds, to grow.  In this understanding is the mission of Christ:  He brings His light into the world in order for us, and for our world on so many levels, to be transfigured, to become more like Him, to find His "way" for us.  In today's reading, Jesus tells the fishermen, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  Here in Christ's words we find a great illustration of what it means to be transfigured into the people Christ calls us to be:  they are fishermen, but He will make them become fishers of men, of people.  His light will transfigure their lives, change them, and they will become something richer and deeper, who they are called to be in His name.  We live in a world of perplexing choices, complicated chances, strange coincidences, and one that demands of us faith.  But we must know ourselves enough to understand that as human beings, we are made for worship, and so we must choose carefully Who and what that is, what we will serve and what we put first.  It is Christ who calls us by our true name, who gives us true meaning.  Who will you follow?

Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men

 
 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.  He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.  

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.  Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.  Great multitudes followed Him -- from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.

Yesterday we read that when Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.  And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:  "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,  Galilee of the Gentiles:  The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."  From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.  Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.  Great multitudes followed Him -- from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan. My study Bible asks us to note that the crowds do not swarm Jesus when He commands repentance (see the final verse in yesterday's reading, above), but only when He starts to heal and to work miracles.  What this shows is that the people misunderstand the true nature of Christ's Kingdom.  Moreover, according to Theophylact (as quoted in my study Bible), it shows Christ's concession "to give credibility to what He teaches" among the fickle multitudes.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing to note in today's reading is the "immediate" quality of this new ministry, this beginning of Christ's public ministry.  The text seems to emphasize its explosive and remarkable growth.  The disciples follow Him immediately in response to His call to "Follow Me."  The rapidity with which His fame spreads not only through Galilee, but through every region of Israel people is remarkable, among all the Jewish communities even in the nearby Gentile areas.  This is significant, because it, in fact, mirrors the rapid spread of Christianity that would occur after Pentecost.  My study Bible correctly points out, however, that the people aren't responding so quickly to Christ's call to repentance, but rather to His healing miracles, including exorcism.  On display is His healing power, giving people something they desperately want.  But Jesus is all of a package, and we can't separate His message from His Kingdom and from the rest of His ministry.  In time, this will prove the case, and the "fickle multitudes" as my study Bible calls them, will show their character.  However, there is another thing we must note that is important in this context both of character, and also Christ's calling to the disciples.  He speaks to these fishermen by calling them not to an amorphous set of principles or values, a mere "belief" system, but to a vocation.  And perhaps most importantly, the vocation to which they're called, their new life in Christ, is one that accentuates and develops something they are already trained to do.  Jesus speaks to them in a language they understand from their own lives as fishermen, telling them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."  (By the way, the Greek word translated as "men" means people or humanity, human beings.)   This gives us an insight to key issues of both identity and our places in God's Kingdom, how we are called to the kingdom of heaven which is at hand.  Christ's power transforms.  Our proximity and our faith (or perhaps one should say our "faithfulness") works to give us new identity, but within the parameters of a kind of transfiguration.  We remain the same person, and yet we are changed -- and from the inside out.  They will not simply become fishers of men because they go around collecting followers for Jesus, bodies to populate this new movement.  They will become fishers of men by becoming disciples of Christ, living with Him, learning from Him, growing in understanding, and being transformed themselves through this process of faithful living and trust in Him.  What we should always remember is that we, like the fishermen, are called toward something.  We are called on a journey of repentance, meaning "change of mind."  It is a journey of transformation, in which all that we are, all that might be constituted as part of "mind" -- and beyond only the intellect -- is changed, transfigured, turned around.  We don't become someone else, but we are drawn out of our circumstances and given a deeper and truer sense of who we are, and the image in which we have been created, in this communion that constitutes the kingdom of heaven.  This is the immediate response, a deep recognition of where the heart truly is, and where we find the one thing -- the One Person -- in whom we can deeply trust to show us the way.

At this time in Israel's history, expectations of a worldly Messiah, who would deliver the people from the Romans -- like a great king in the style of David -- were very high.  So much so, that the people await one who can do what Jesus does, and be accompanied by the signs prophesied in the Scriptures.  But Jesus is not going to be that kind of worldly king or deliverer, and He comes preaching repentance.  The stage is, therefore, already set for the conflicts that will arise later on in Christ's ministry.  People will be annoyed with Him (such as in His home town of Nazareth, as His neighbors simply cannot accept this identity in the Person they know as the carpenter's son; see Matthew 13:53-58), they'll be outraged at Him, eventually His very persecution will center on this idea that He could be the Christ.  The religious leaders will claim He stands convicted of blasphemy for even answering their question about this identity (Matthew 26:63-65).  Although John the Baptist had many followers, and preached a baptism of repentance in preparation for the Messiah (see this reading), Jesus the Messiah is a completely different proposition, and the expectations for a Messiah are much more worldly than the Messiah that Christ actually is.  He does not come as a conquering king who will re-establish the kingdom of Israel, but He comes instead preaching the kingdom of heaven.  But when Jesus begins using divine power to heal, that is another matter.  These are signs of the kingdom of heaven being quite present, effecting cures prophesied for the time of the Messiah, such as in these passages from Isaiah:  "In that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book, And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness" (Isaiah 29:18).  Moreover, Jesus has command over unclean spirits, and so also heals the afflictions caused by such, including torments.  This is one kind of a deliverer that makes sense, someone who can relieve people of these effects of a fallen world into which has come death and sin.  So, therefore His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.  Great multitudes followed Him -- from Galilee, and from Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.  So Jesus now has followers from everywhere in the historical Jewish world, and soon even those who come as pilgrims to Jerusalem will before long be seeking Him as well.  Note that He preaches the gospel of the kingdom as He teaches in the synagogues of all Galilee.  In our next reading, Jesus will begin preaching the greatest sermon we know on the gospel of the kingdom, the Sermon on the Mount.  For now, let us consider into what world of expectations Jesus comes as a Man, One who preaches repentance and the kingdom, but also bears signs of the Messiah.

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel

 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him. 

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  As it is written in the Prophets:  "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You."  "The voice of one crying in the wilderness:  'Prepare the way of the LORD; make His paths straight.' John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.  Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.   Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.  I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."  It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.  Then a voice came from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."  Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. 
 
  Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  My study Bible comments that Mark's written emphasis on John being put in prison before Jesus begins preaching reveals that a key purpose of the old covenant -- to prepare the people for Christ -- had been completed (Galatians 4:1-5).  Once Christ came, the time of preparation was fulfilled.  To repent is to do a total "about-face," my study Bible explains.  The word in Greek (μετανοια/metanoia) literally means to "change one's mind."  My study Bible says that repentance is a radical change of one's spirit, mind, thought, and heart -- a complete reorientation to a life centered in Christ.  
 
 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.  My study Bible reminds us that these first disciples had already heard the preaching of John the Baptist, and so they are prepared to immediately leave their nets and follow Him (see John 1:35-50).  It adds that, although they were illiterate and unlearned in religion, these "people of the land" whom Jesus calls will be revealed at Pentecost to be the wisest of all (see Acts 2).

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  My study Bible comments that the word immediately occurs nearly forty times in Mark's Gospel, almost all of them before Christ's entrance into Jerusalem.  This sense of urgency and  purpose as Christ goes toward Jerusalem to fulfill His mission of redeeming the world helps make Mark's account not only the shortest but also the most direct of the four Gospels.

And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.  Christ's first public preaching astonished the people, because He teaches as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  My study Bible explains that both the prophets of old and the teachers of Christ's day taught in the third person (e.g. "The Lord says").  But Christ teaches in the first person ("I say to you," as in Matthew 5).   Christ commands the unclean spirit to "Be quiet, and come out of him!"   My study Bible comments that our Lord's refusal to fully disclose His identity as Messiah is foreseen by Isaiah (Isaiah 42:1-4).  There are several reasons for this.  We will see the growing hostility of the religious leaders; the people's misunderstanding of the Messiah as an earthly, political leader will cause problems and false expectations; and Christ's desire is to evoke genuine faith which is not based only on marvelous signs.  Isaiah prophesies about the Servant; referring first to Christ, and then by extension to all who follow Him.
 
In today's reading, we can see a clear kind of evolution of Christ's ministry, a pattern of a beginning and expansion.  But, as my study Bible points out, the beginning isn't really a beginning, but one that was made possible by what came before as preparation, and that is the whole history of the people of God, of Israel and the God of Israel.  John the Baptist is the last in a long line of prophets of the Old Testament.  He tells us all directly what this pattern of both fulfillment and beginning is about:  "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  So perhaps today we might pause to think about what it means to evolve, and why when we look at patterns -- such as in our reading for today -- we can see what look like stepping stones on a way somewhere.  There is a foundation of the spirituality embedded in the ministry of John the Baptist, who introduces Christ's first disciples to Jesus (see the excerpt from John's Gospel), so that later they may "immediately" leave their boats and follow Christ when He calls them to His ministry.  From there Jesus begins to teach in the Sabbaths in the synagogue at Capernaum, and almost as a natural response to that, the unclean spirits -- usually hidden from our awareness -- begin to respond to the presence of Jesus.  One thing seems to proceed to the other, and it's presented to us as a kind of road, a pattern that will be followed through to the end.  That is, to Christ's Passion, which is, of course, another beginning, and another foundation for something new, and growing, and proceeding ahead -- which is the period in which we currently live.  One may stop and wonder just how all of this evolves, and of course we ascribe it to the work of God in the world.  But even that is something that grows and expands, and takes on surprising new turns and manifestations.  In our recent readings at the end of Luke's Gospel, we read about the Promise given of the Holy Spirit.  In the theological language of the Orthodox Church, grace is spoken of as the energies of God.  That is, grace is the form that God's energies take on in the world, through which we can know God.  This is so even though we cannot know God in God's essence, as God "knows" God, so to speak.  This action of the Holy Spirit in the world is something to which the Scriptures and the Church testify, but the evolution of God's work in the world also contends with the patterns of rebellion against God, with the fact that "an enemy" has also sown seeds in this world (see the parable of the Wheat and the Tares).  So what we might expect as a clear or straight path is not really precisely our earthly idea of clear and straight.  It must also deal with the "enemy" who sowed other seeds in this world.  It must also contend with, for instance, the unclean spirit, who calls out to Jesus, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  This becomes a part of the path, a part of the story, as Jesus must Himself assert His authority over the spirit.  Importantly, in our own lives, we should see our paths similarly.  There might be all kinds of things that seem to tempt us to go this way or that, distract us with their drama, or with an appeal that says we "should" be doing some other thing.  In the parable of the Sower, Jesus talks about distractions as thorns that choke the word, "the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things" (Mark 4:19).  And yet, He has given us the Promise, His Spirit.  He has given us His word.  He has given us the saints, and He has given us the Church.  Our paths might not be straight, and the world may not beat a path to our door as a result, but He gives us the grace, and shows us the way to follow Him.  This particular time is always at hand, and John's words remain true for this always-new beginning, even today:  "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."

Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch

 
 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.  Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land.  And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.  When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."  But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net."  And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.  So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.  And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.  When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"  For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid.  From now on you will catch men."  So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

Yesterday we read that, after preaching there, Jesus arose from the synagogue in Capernaum and entered Simon's house.  But Simon's wife's mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her.  So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.  And immediately she arose and served them.  When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.  And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!"  And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.  Now when it was day, He departed and went to a deserted place.  And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; but He said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent."  And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
 
 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.  My study Bible explains that the Lake of Gennesaret is also known as the Sea of Galilee.  It is about 13 miles long and 7 miles wide.  
 
 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land.  And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.  My study Bible explains that sitting was the traditional position for a teacher.  Some early Christian preachers, such as St. John Chrysostom, sat while the people stood.  In Matthew 5:1, Jesus is described as "seated" just before He begins to preach the Sermon on the Mount to His disciples.  

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."  My study Bible tells us that St. Ambrose sees a spiritual meaning in the command to launch out into the deep, as an invitation to give one's life over to the deep mystery of the knowledge of the Son of God.  
 
 But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net."  And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.  So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.  And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.  My study Bible comments here that the Lord draws people to Himself by things which are familiar to them.  As He drew the Magi with a star (Matthew 2:2), as He would draw tax collectors by a tax collector (Luke 5:29), here Christ draws the fishermen with fish (see 1 Corinthians 9:19-23).  
 
 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"  My study Bible says that Peter's cry in the face of divine power is not a rejection of Jesus (contrast this to Luke 8:37).  Rather, he suddenly sees himself in the light of Christ.  My study Bible explains that holy people such as Peter become keenly aware of their own unworthiness (compare Isaiah 6:5; Revelation 1:17). 

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid.  From now on you will catch men."  So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.  My study Bible explains that the great catch of fish is an image of the apostles, who bring mankind to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and it fulfills the prophecy of Jeremiah 16:16.  In the Eastern Orthodox festal hymn of Pentecost, it is sung, "Through the fishermen, You drew the world into Your net."
 
There are a few interesting elements in today's reading which we might call poetic.  It is something of the poetry of Scripture, or perhaps we might simply say the poetry of God.  First of all, the text says that they are at the Lake of Gennesaret, where Simon Peter has his boat, and is fishing along with James and John Zebedee.  The etymology of the word Gennesaret is disputed and unclear. But many suggest that the basis for the name is a word for "garden."  Some say it means possibly, "garden of the Prince," or suggestive of Paradise (long associated with a beautiful garden).  The Lake of Gennesaret (also known as the Sea of Galilee) overlooks a very fertile plain called the plain of Gennesaret.  This area was known for its abundance:  abundant fertility and variety of crops, good soil and conditions for growth, as well as the abundance of fish the lake provided here.  So, all of this combines with the poetic imagery of the disciples whom Jesus says will become fishers of men.  They will go out to bring an abundant harvest, an abundant catch, symbolized in the great catch of fish in their nets, and they bear the kingdom of heaven with them, the "Paradise" suggested in the name and the abundant beauty and fertility of this region, evidently great conditions for the sustaining of human life.  Think of the impossibly great multiples of faithful created through this beginning of Christ's ministry and this handful of early disciples.   Finally we come to the end of our reading, in which we're told that these early disciples brought their boats to land, and then forsook all and followed Him.  We know they were already disciples before this point (in yesterday's reading, we read how Jesus came to Peter's house, and healed his mother-in-law of a fever).  But now they are called by Christ to a new life, a new métier, a new way of life and work to do, so they forsake all and follow Him.  When we think of that net full of fish to the point of breaking, the boats full to the point of sinking, we can think of this fertile plain, and the surprising variety of crops that grew together, usually requiring varying conditions, because that is what the future Church would look like.  That abundance of the fish is the abundance of the countless number of people since who have come to know Christ because of the apostles.  These men, too, will give it their "all," for they have been called, and they will respond, nearly all of them holding nothing back, including even the sacrifice of their lives.  Jesus told them to "launch out into the deep," and so they have -- deepening their faith, moving toward the deeper mysteries of God, and expanding their commitment more deeply into their hearts and lives.

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel

 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.  

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."   And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

 In yesterday's reading, we started Mark's Gospel:  The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  As it is written in the Prophets: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You." "The voice of one crying in the wilderness:  'Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.'"  John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.  Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.  Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.  I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."  It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.  Then a voice came from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."  Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. 
 
  Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  My study Bible tells us that Mark's written emphasis on John being put in prison before Jesus begins preaching reveals that a key purpose of the old covenant -- preparing the people for Christ -- had been completed (Galatians 4:1-5).   As Christ has come, the time of preparation was fulfilled.  My study Bible explains that to repent is to do a total "about-face."  We noted in yesterday's reading that in Greek this word literally means to "change one's mind."   This is a radical change of one's spirit, mind, thought, and heart.  My study Bible calls it a complete reorientation to a life centered in Christ.  Let us also add that this is a lifelong process.   Just as the stories of the Bible indicate, our faith is a journey; Christ is "the way" (from a word that means "road" in Greek).  Our faith is always called to grow and deepen; we are always called to bear fruits worthy of repentance, the spiritual fruit of faith (Galatians 5:22-23).

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.   If we look at the Gospel of John, we know that these first disciples had already heard the preaching of John the Baptist (John 1:35-50).  They were thus prepared to accept Christ immediately.  Although they were illiterate and unlearned in religion, my study Bible explains, these "people of the land" whom Jesus calls will be revealed at Pentecost to be the wisest of all.

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."   And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.  My study Bible points out that the word immediately occurs nearly forty times in Mark's Gospel, and nearly all of these occur before the Lord's entrance into Jerusalem.  This sense of urgency and purpose as Christ journeys toward Jerusalem to fulfill His mission of redeeming the world helps make Mark's Gospel not only the shortest, but also the most direct of the four Gospels.  

If we look closely at the text of today's reading, we see an element which is not necessarily obvious but it teaches us something important.  Jesus begins His ministry, taking up from where the last and greatest in the line of the Old Testament type prophets, John the Baptist, has come preparing people for this Kingdom (see yesterday's reading, above).  At that time, Jesus declares to all, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  Again, as explained in our commentary from yesterday, "gospel" (εὐαγγέλιον/evangelion), literally meaning "good news," was a quite commonly known term in the empire of Christ's time, in the Greek that formed the lingua franca, or international language of His time.  It was the title for the various missives sent across the empire by the Emperor, setting out plans and policies or declaring news of victorious battles.  So when Christ teaches to believe in the gospel, it is emphasizing this sense of a kingdom which is at hand, present to the people.  This is not the kingdom of Herod and his descendants, nor the empire of Caesar, but the kingdom of God -- which remains to us present and at hand (Matthew 18:20; Luke 17:20-21).  This kingdom is present with Christ, for as St. Paul taught the Athenians about the "unknown god," Jesus Christ, "He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being" (see Acts 17:26-28).   But, if we read a little further, we see that, similarly to the kingdoms of the world, this Kingdom also has its battles with an enemy (see the parable of the Wheat and the Tares).  But this is a spiritual battleground.  Jesus' first act after calling disciples and entering the synagogue to preach, is to encounter an unclean spirit.  The spirit challenges Christ, informing us about this battle and Christ's spiritual authority, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"   The people respond, astonished at this evidence of what is unseen, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  Our faith does depend upon understanding that we are always in a kind of a struggle, just as Christ's testing in the wilderness for forty days did as the first act of the Spirit after His Baptism (again, see yesterday's reading, above).  So we must not be dismayed or disheartened in the times when we go through our own struggles with faith, when our common assumptions and ways of thinking, or the hurtful things of this world, come to challenge us.  Just as the Crucifixion remains the greatest paradox of transfiguration by Christ's ministry and presence, with the figure of the Cross being the sign of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:30), so we should remember that we are taught we each have our own unique cross to bear into the world, and this is always an element of our lives.  The work of faith is to transfigure this world, with the presence of the kingdom of God, which is always "at hand."   Through our own lives of faith as His disciples, suffering becomes transfigured with meaning when challenges are met with the help that is always spiritually present to us even if we feel alone.  For the Cross means that the power of Resurrection is present and with us, despite the darkness (John 1:5).  This is the mystery of the kingdom of God and God's grace.  Let us call on the resources we have and look to His light.  Modern life seems to challenge us with expectations of easy happiness, guaranteed through some sort of acquisition of material goods, or new inventions -- perhaps a new identity, a new change in our appearance.  But the wisdom of our faith teaches us something much greater than such a limited, and misleading perspective.  It gives us what is eternal and abiding, and therefore true.  But it calls us into a dynamic that will involve every aspect of life, "in which we live and move and have our being."  That is the kingdom of God, always at hand.

 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.  Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's and asked him to put out a little from the land.  And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.   The Lake of Gennesaret is also known as the Sea of Galilee, which indeed is truly a very large lake.  Possibly this name is used here in the context of the story as Gennesaret was a name that holds the meaning of a type of garden (possibly meaning "princely gardens").  The entire region was understood as extremely fertile agriculturally, as well as for its abundance of fish, germane to today's reading.  Note that the text tells us that Jesus sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.  Sitting was the traditional position for an authoritative  Jewish teacher.  My study Bible remarks that some early Christian preachers, such as St. John Chrysostom, sat while the people stood.

Jesus "brings in" these first disciples through the extraordinary catch of fish in the place He told them to put down their nets.  It is enough for Simon Peter to understand Christ's holiness, and indeed to call Him "Lord."  John's Gospel tells us that these first disciples were earlier introduced to Christ through the preaching of John the Baptist (John 1:35-42).   So we may assume that although this is the first encounter mentioned in Luke's Gospel (after the healing of Peter's mother-in-law in Saturday's reading),  Peter, James, and John already knew who Jesus was and had certainly heard His preaching.  But when this extraordinary catch of fish happens for them, it reveals to Peter a deep truth he was somehow prepared to accept.  It is not some sort of "proof" that compels him to faith, or simply dazzles him with astonishment.  It serves as a sign of truth which prompted something in him that was already seeking, and prepared to be kindled by faith.  We can learn from his response what it is to truly respond to a revelation, a sign of something present, and to recognize that presence through the kindling of honest faith.  His astonished response, so typical of this earnest if not always prudent apostle, gives us the truth of what type of man he is, and what is in his heart.  He feels his whole self revealed to Christ, even as Christ is -- through his capacity for faith -- revealed to him.  This kind of "naked" revelation of his soul in the light of Christ is what prompts his response to Jesus.  It is Peter's own awareness of his sinfulness, his imperfection, that he becomes aware of.   Peter's absolute honesty and recognition of himself in that light becomes a testimony to his capacity for faith, another revelation of what kind of man he is, and why he becomes the apostle we know.  These three -- Peter, James, and John -- will become Christ's closest inner circle, the ones with the faith He most relies upon throughout His ministry.  When Jesus goes up on the Mount of Transfiguration, it is Peter, James, and John whom He takes with Him (Luke 9:28-36).  When He prays before His Passion in the garden of Gethsemane, it is Peter, James, and John upon whom He calls to stay with Him and pray (Matthew 26:35-46).  None of these disciples does everything perfectly when asked by Jesus on these occasions (there is a lot of sleep involved when things are overwhelming for them).  It is during the time in Gethsemane when Jesus tells Simon (Peter), "The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Matthew 26:41).  But it is from encounters such as the one in today's reading that we understand Jesus calls those whose spirit is willing, and knows who they are, for they respond with something deep inside of themselves that is the root of faith.  Let us keep in mind that He will give Simon the name Peter ("Rock"), for the rock of faith upon which the Church will be built, expressed in Peter's confession (Matthew 16:13-20).  For now, let us understand that the recognition with which Simon responds to Christ in today's reading is a sign of that capacity for faith, a deep response that grasps at the true meaning in the abundance of faith.  For He calls those upon whom He seeks to rely for the growth of that faith, and discipleship, and we may well also become fishers of men like they do.
