The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned

 
 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.  And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
"The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles:
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
Light has dawned." 
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.  For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, / Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'" Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.  And he said to Him,  Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan!  For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"  Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
 
Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.  And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, / By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, / Galilee of the Gentiles: . . ."  The Gospel makes it very clear that the preparatory mission of John the Baptist has been completed, as Jesus waited until he heard that John had been put in prison to depart to Galilee.  According to my study Bible, Galilee of the Gentiles indicates that many non-Jews lived in this region.  As it had a mixed population, it wasn't considered a genuinely Jewish land, although many of its Gentile residents had converted to Judaism during the Maccabean period.  Because many of the Jews of Galilee had been influenced by the Greek culture and its customs, my study Bible adds, they were generally considered to be second-class citizens by the Jews of Judea. 
 
"The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, / And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death / Light has dawned."   St. Matthew quotes here from Isaiah 9:1-2.  My study Bible explains that darkness means ungodliness.  Here, it says, "darkness" represents the Gentiles' unawareness of God and the Jews being under the shadow of the Old Covenant.  To sit in darkness means to be overcome by spiritual ignorance.  The great light is the gospel of Jesus Christ.  See also John 1:4-5.
 
 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."  My study Bible notes that Christ's first word, similarly to that of John the Baptist, is "Repent."  The difference, however, is that the kingdom of heaven is present wherever Christ is.  But nevertheless, Christ's mission is still to call us to repentance.  My study Bible explains that this is the necessary first step in the way of the Lord.  It is accompanied by the confession of sins and the act of baptism, and is to be followed by a life filled with fruits worthy of this change.  
 
As longtime readers of this blog will know, the term repentance is extremely important for us to understand.  In Greek, this word is μετανοια/metanoia, and it literally means "change of mind."   Repentance is not the same as simply feeling guilty, nor merely feeling sorry.  Repentance indicates change, a change that goes from one direction to another;  that is, from wherever we are and going toward Christ, where Christ would have us go.  Properly, our entire lives in Christ, and the whole of the religious and spiritual journey of our lives should be a constant renewal in this sense of repentance, personal transformation.  As we grow more deeply in this relationship with and participation in the life of Christ, so also we will change.  We will experience a kind of constant experience of conversion, metanoia, change of mind.  Of course, we have help on this journey.  We are not led simply by our own noses or our own opinions, but rather by all the things which are offered in the Church, and the things left to us by Christ.  Most notably there is the work of the Holy Spirit in us, and Christ's great Light within us.  St. Paul has explained that we are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in us (see Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 3:16).   Additionally, we are left with sacraments and services, the practices and traditions of the Church, the Scriptures and prayers.  We have help in the saints and the angels who guide us and form the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us and worships with us (Hebrews 12:1).  All of these things are meant not only to shore up our faith, to help us to live that faith, but also to hold us in the embrace of the kingdom of heaven even as we live in this world, so that this active and ongoing work of repentance in us may bear the spiritual fruit that is possible for us, and follow Christ where we are led.  This is the action of the Light which continually leads us out of our own darkness, a constant illuminating process.  In fact, historically, Christian Holy Baptism has also been called "Illumination."  It is this sense in which Baptism begins our journey, which is ongoing and culminates only in the fullness of Christ's light, an eternal goal and not simply a temporal one.  As my study Bible notes, the kingdom of heaven is at hand for us, for where Christ is, so there is His Kingdom.  Where two or three are gathered in His name, He has promised us, so He is there also, and moreover, He is with us always.  He is the morning star that rises in our hearts, and the light shining in a dark place  (2 Peter 1:19-20).  For we are all disciples -- that is, learners -- and this is our road, Christ's "way."

A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house

 
 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.  And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue.  And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, "Where did this Man get these things?  And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!  Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon?  And are not His sisters here with us?"  So they were offended at Him.  But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house."  Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.  And He marveled because of their unbelief.  Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching. 
 
And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.  He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts -- but to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.  Also He said to them, "In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place.  And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them.  Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!"  So they went out and preached that people should repent.  And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.

Yesterday we read that when Jesus had crossed over again by boat back to His ministry's "home" territory of Capernaum, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea.  And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name.  And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet and begged Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter lies at the point of death.  Come and lay your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live."  So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.  Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had suffered many things from many physicians.  She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.  When she heard about Jesus she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.  For she said, "If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well."  Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.  And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My clothes?"  But His disciples said to Him, "You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"  And He looked around to see her who had done this thing.  But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.  And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well.  Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction."  While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, "Your daughter is dead.  Why trouble the Teacher any further?"  As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid; only believe."  And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.  Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly.  When He came in, He said to them, "Why make this commotion and weep?  The child is not dead, but sleeping."  And they ridiculed Him.  But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying.  Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, "Talitha, cumi," which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, arise."  Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age.  And they were overcome with great amazement.  But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.
 
  Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.  And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue.  And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, "Where did this Man get these things?  And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!  Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon?  And are not His sisters here with us?"  So they were offended at Him.  Christ's own country is the town of Nazareth in Galilee.  My study Bible remarks that this double response of being both astonished and offended is a frequent occurrence with those who encounter Christ (Luke 11:14-16; John 9:16).  Jesus' rejection in His own country is a foreshadowing of His rejection by His whole nation at His trial before Pilate (John 19:14-15).  Christ's brothers and sisters are either extended family or children from a previous marriage by Joseph, Christ's earthly guardian, who was already elderly when Mary the Theotokos was betrothed to him.  "Brother" is frequently found in tradition and throughout the Bible to refer to many different relations, such as cousins, nephews, uncles, etc.
 
 But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house."  Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.  And He marveled because of their unbelief.  Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.  My study Bible tells us that Jesus could do no mighty work there, not because He lacked power, but because of the unbelief of all but a few in Nazareth.  It comments that while grace is always offered to all, only those who receive it in faith obtain its benefits.  Christ's statement, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house," appears in all four Gospels.
 
 And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.  He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff -- no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts -- but to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.  Also He said to them, "In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place.  And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them.  Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!"  So they went out and preached that people should repent.   The twelve disciples now become apostles, those who are sent out on a mission; in the Greek of the Gospels the word for disciple means "learner" and apostle means "one sent out" (as on a mission).  Note that Jesus gave them power; this is His power which He used in His own healing, signs, and exorcisms.  St. Mark here reports that they were sent out two by two.  In the Gospel of St. Matthew, the names are given in pairs (Matthew 10:1-4).  Perhaps these pairs are those who traveled together on this first mission.  Let us note the humble way in which they are to go from place to place:  without bag, nor bread, nor copper money.  Even their clothing is to be simple and minimal.  There is nothing grandiose in their manner or appearance to impress people with anything but the power He's given them, so that only those who truly desire to receive them or their message will do so.  In this way also, they cannot be accused of greed, and they will learn dependence upon God.
 
 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.  My study Bible has a commentary regarding anointing the sick with oil.  It says that this has not only medicinal value but sacramental value as well.  It notes that God's healing power is bestowed through creation (Mark 5:27; Numbers 21:8-9; 2 Kings 13:21; John 9:6-7; Acts 5:15, 19:11-12).  In the same way, oil is a vehicle of God's mercy and healing in the Church (James 5:14).
 
 As we noted above, Christ's saying, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house" appears in some form in all four Gospels (see also Matthew 13:57, Luke 4:24, John 4:44).  Therefore it's in some sense a very important statement, one we must take note of.  It seems appropriate to notice that in the same reading where we are told He is rejected in His hometown by the people among whom He grew up, we're also told of Jesus sending out His apostles on their first mission to go preach, to practice exorcisms, and to heal the sick.  Notably, we can compare His experiences in Nazareth with the missions of the apostles.  In Nazareth, we're told that He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.  And even Jesus is surprised by His reception in His hometown, where they are astonished, but also offended because of the marvelous words He displays, His wisdom, and even His works.  He's not the same person they thought they knew.  Even Jesus marveled because of their unbelief.   What does that tell us about this phenomenon?  Yet, it is supremely human.  It would seem that our impulse to resentment at those who in some ways surpass our own expectations might be universal; however, in this case, the offense comes because of the actions and gifts of God, and the rejection has the effect of tamping down even Christ's capacity for using divine power among people.  For as we have already observed many times, it is faith that makes the difference in receiving the work of God among us.  Then on the other hand, we read of the apostles being sent out on their first mission.  It would seem that as Christ is rejected in one place so as for Him to marvel, the apostles are sent out -- with His power -- to preach and cast out demons and heal, and so His work is spread out among the people as is His word, carried among the apostles.  One old door is shut to Him, and He sends them out, and new doors are opened in the places where they are welcomed.  Since Jesus has already likened the growth the kingdom of God to a tiny mustard seed that grows such that even the birds of the air can take rest in the shade, we can understand this growth (see this reading from last week).  We should perhaps consider this a kind of a pattern that reflects the work of God in the world.  When it is suppressed or rejected in one place, it will go to another where it can bloom and shoot out new branches, creating surprising growth that may indeed astonish.  At any rate, this is our Lord's response to His rejection in His hometown, to send out the apostles on this first mission, to send out His power even through "new vessels" and a new mission.  Today's reading also teaches us that we must be prepared for rejection, for if even the Lord is rejected at home and among His own, so none of us can say we won't be treated any differently.  As He has said Himself, "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!" (Matthew 10:24-25).  Perhaps this pattern of rejection and expansion is also seen in the Cross.  Christ's death and Resurrection -- and Ascension into heaven -- fits the same.  Death in any form cannot stop the power of God in our world, but it may go elsewhere and turn to new forms.  Let us always be ready to receive it.

I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!

 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."
 
And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.  
 
Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His  teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that the questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

 Yesterday we began reading the Gospel of St. Mark, which starts with the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  As it is written in the Prophets: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You."  "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; make His paths straight.'"  John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.  Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.  Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.  I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."  It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.  Then a voice came from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."  Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.
 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel." My study Bible comments that Mark's written emphasis on John being put in prison before Jesus begins preaching reveals that a key purpose of the old covenant -- to prepare people for Christ -- had been completed (Galatians 4:1-5).  Once Christ came into the world, the time of preparation was now fulfilled.  My study Bible explains that to repent is to do a total "about-face."  In Greek, this word literally means "change one's mind."  It's a radical change of one's spirit, mind, though, and heart -- a total reorientation to life centered in Christ.  
 
 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.  These first disciples had already heard the preaching of John the Baptist, and so were prepared to immediately accept Christ and follow Him.  It is impossible to overestimate the high regard the people had for John the Baptist, and his leading of his disciples to Christ (see John 1:35-42).  Although they were illiterate and unlearned in religion, these "people of the land," as my study Bible describes them, will be revealed at Pentecost to be the wisest of all.  
 
 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His  teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that the questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.  My study Bible comments that the word immediately appears almost forty times in St. Mark's Gospel.  Nearly all of these uses of the word "immediately" occur prior to Christ's entrance into Jerusalem.  It says that the sense of urgency and purpose as Christ journey to Jerusalem to fulfill His mission of redeeming the world helps make St. Mark's account not only the shortest, but also the most direct of all the four Gospels.  Notice how Jesus gets right down to the work of His ministry; once He endures the temptation in the wilderness, and is baptized wherein there was the theophany of the manifestation of Father, Son, and Spirit, He begins to choose His disciples, and then immediately on the Sabbath entered the synagogue and taught.  According to St. Ambrose of Milan, Jesus begins preaching and healing on the Sabbath to show that "the new creation began where the old creation ceased."  This new doctrine that makes the people marvel and wonder is the authority with which Christ preaches, heals, and casts out demons.  My study Bible contrasts this with the prophets of old and the teachers of His time, who taught in the third person ("the Lord says").  Christ teaches and acts of Himself, in the first person, commanding the spirits to be quiet and come out.  Here is observed Christ desire to remain hidden, not to disclose His identity as Messiah.  My study Bible says this was foreseen by Isaiah (Isaiah 42:1-4).  Several reasons are given here for this secrecy.  They include the growing hostility of the religious leaders to Jesus; the people's misunderstanding and expectation of the Messiah as an earthly, political leader; and Christ's desire to evoke genuine faith which is not based solely on marvelous signs.  
 
We observe that the unclean spirit knows exactly who Christ is.  He recognizes Him as the Holy One of God, saying,  "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  Not only do the unclean spirits know Jesus of Nazareth, they know His identity as the Holy One of God.  It's strange to think that the demons themselves don't really deny Christ at all, even though they are part of the force that opposes Him.  They know full well who He is, and they fear His power to destroy them.  Moreover, there is only one Holy One of God, and that is the Son who is incarnate as Jesus of Nazareth.  Unlike human beings who scoff at faith, who claim to be unbelievers, or who simply doubt anything about the story of Jesus, the demons know very well who He is and certainly believe the truth about Him as presented in the Gospels.  From our perspective as human beings, we might wonder at this.  It's not the common understanding of what it means to be irreligious.  But the human rebellion against God comes in other forms than that of these unclean spirits who belong to another realm in which they clearly recognize Christ.  Our version of rebellion against God, and expressions of hatred and fear of Christ, come in other forms.  They come in the forms in which we participate in the activities and "energies," if you will, of those who hate Christ, and who hate the truth of Christ.  These may take the form of petty cruelties, deliberate malice and evil, harsh treatment of others who are undeserving of it.  It takes the form of disruption in a Church when power plays become all that matter to those who think they own this jewel that Christ has left us, because they don't understand spiritual truth and its nature at all.  It comes in the form of manipulation, lies, and trickery for personal gain in many forms and venues.  Together with St. John, as written in the Revelation, we may add that it includes "whoever loves and makes a lie" (Revelation 22:15).  For our early Christian forbears, such was the work of the Antichrist, and those who participate in such forms of denial of Christ participate in the spirit of the Antichrist (1 John 2:18).  So while we may not see such sights every day as the one described here, while we might not be able to identify an "unclean spirit," we can still understand what it is to participate in the energies of the spirit that opposes Christ and fears His reign and power.  Let us keep a close watch on our own hearts during this Lent, and seek to stop if we, too, find the temptations to participate in such works.  For our best hope is instead to work the works of God (John 6:28-29).

Yesterday we read that Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.  Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."  But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"  Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.  For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and,  'In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'" Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.   And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."  Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan!  For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"  Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. 
 
 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.  Note that the Gospel gives us a sense of the "handing off" of ministry from John the Baptist, the last and greatest prophet of the Old Testament type prophets, to Jesus, who brings the New Covenant through His ministry.  John is titled the Forerunner, the one who prepared the people for Christ's ministry.
 
And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, / By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, / Galilee of the Gentiles: . . .  My study Bible comments that the term Galilee of the Gentiles indicates that many non-Jews lived in the region of Galilee.  As Galilee had a mixed population, it was not considered a genuinely Jewish land, although many Gentile residents had converted to Judaism during the Maccabean period.  Because many of the Jews there had been influenced by the Greek culture and its customs, my study Bible says, they were generally considered to be second-class citizens by the Jews of Judea.  
 
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, / And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death / Light has dawned."   Darkness, my study Bible explains, means ungodliness.  Here it is representative of the Gentiles' unawareness of God and the Jews being under the shadow of the Old Covenant.  To sit in darkness means to be overcome by spiritual ignorance.  The great light, it says, is the gospel of Jesus Christ. 
 
  From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."   This is Christ's first word of His ministry, echoing that of John the Baptist, "Repent" (see this reading).  The kingdom of heaven, my study Bible says, is present wherever Christ is.
 
 My study Bible comments that the kingdom of heaven is present wherever Christ is.  At the moment when Christ first comes preaching this word, people have yet to see the unfolding of His ministry and His teachings, His miracles and His criticisms of the religious leadership.  The people who hear Christ in the beginning of His ministry don't yet know about what is to come in Holy Week, His Crucifixion, nor His Resurrection.  They don't know about Pentecost and the Church to come.  But when we listen and know and accept in the Church that "where Christ is, there is the kingdom of heaven" we need to think about all that this means.  For where Christ is, there is also the whole of Christ.  There is the Man who taught us that to follow Him is to take up our own crosses.  There is the One who was Crucified.  There is the One who died and resurrected and who ascended into heaven, even divinizing human flesh, so that we could follow Him there also.  So when we hear the command "Repent" used by Christ, let us hear all of its meaning for us.  For it does not come in a vacuum to us.  We are not the people of Galilee who first hear Him preach and have no familiarity with Him except perhaps as One from a town of not much reputation, Nazareth, a son of a carpenter.  To repent in our context, as those who must hear echoes of the fullness of Christ's mission and ministry in what He preaches here, we must understand that the command to repent is asking us to be conformed to Him in our love for Him, the same way that in a solid marriage of love, we find spouses conforming to one another out of love.  But He is our Bridegroom, the head of our family, the One who teaches us what we are all about, gives us His Creed, and encourages us in turn to bloom in that repentance, in following Him, as each one may do with whatever they have been given in life, created as a unique soul by God.  To repent, in the true meaning of the Greek term, is to "change one's mind."  But this is a special kind of changing of one's mind.  This is a change of mind that comes through the influence of Christ, of that kingdom of heaven that exists wherever He is.  And let us not forget that where He is, so also is the Father and the Holy Spirit, and the fullness of the kingdom of heaven in the great cloud of witnesses testified to by St. Paul.  We "repent" or change in terms of the influence and effect of our closeness to Christ in all of that fullness, just like the disciples will who follow Him in the stories of the Gospels.  Let us remember when we pray, when we turn to the Cross, in all our moments when we seek Christ, that there is the kingdom of heaven, and His mission and ministry meant for us to dwell there also, and to help to bring it into this world through our faith in following Him and bearing His light within us.

The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light

 
 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.  And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
"The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles:
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
Light has dawned."
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

 "The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, / And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death / Light has dawned."   Darkness is another term which means ungodliness.  Here it represents the Gentiles' unawareness of God, according to my study Bible, as well as the Jews being under the shadow of the Old Covenant.  To sit in darkness, my study Bible explains, means to be overcome by spiritual ignorance.  The great light is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

 Jesus' first word of His preaching in His public ministry is, Repent.  In fact, what He says is identical to John the Baptist's preaching, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."  It's important that we notice Matthew takes time to remark that Jesus has waited to begin His public ministry until after John is put in prison.  With these first words reported in the Gospel, it's clear we're to understand there is no important break between John the Baptist and Jesus in terms of their service to God as part of the same plan of redemption.  Although John, importantly, was a part of the Old Covenant (and in fact, the last and greatest of the Old Testament prophets), and Jesus Himself ushers in the New, they are nonetheless on the same continuity, each playing their role in the salvation plan of God.   Jesus will say to the disciples, "Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he" (Matthew 11:11).  This illustrates the place of John the Baptist, and also the continuity between the doctrine of the Old and the New Covenants.  John has come preparing the people for the Messiah with a message and also a baptism of repentance.  But Jesus will usher in a different Holy Baptism.  As John has said in preparing the people, the Christ will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire (Matthew 3:11).  John's baptism of repentance called people to do an "about-face" preparing for the Messiah, to "prepare the way of the LORD" and to "make His paths straight" (in the words of Isaiah 40:3), in order to receive the Christ.  But when Jesus commands repentance, it is He who is the One to turn to and to receive.  We are to prepare to follow Him, and have our own "change of mind" (the meaning of the Greek word for repentance) as He inaugurates us into the kingdom of heaven and we find our way forward.  Our faithfulness is what is asked for, for He takes us not to a set of propositions and laws, but rather onto a journey with Him -- for as my study Bible says, where He is, so is the kingdom of heaven.  Some two thousand years later, we are still on that journey, and it is a new one for each generation, for each person who receives Him and participates in His life and community of the Church and all the communion of saints.  May we continue to bear the fruits of repentance and of the Spirit, for it remains His light that guides us and shows us the way out of our own darkness.

Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight

 
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"  For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: 
"The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
'Prepare the way of the LORD;
Make His paths straight.'"
Now John himself was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.  Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. 
 
- Matthew (1:1-17) 3:1–6 
 
 In today's lectionary reading we are given Matthew 1:1-17 as a parenthetical beginning.  Matthew begins his Gospel by giving us the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the history and lineage of His birth.  Let us consider some significant factors and meanings to the genealogy given here in Matthew.  Jesus means "O Lord, save," which refers to His role as Savior.  Christ means "Anointed One," giving us the Messiah, the One who is filled with the Holy Spirit (see John 1:33).  My study Bible reminds us that although the Son alone became a human being, God the Father and the Holy Spirit work in Jesus Christ to save us.  Matthew's genealogy begins by referring to Jesus as the son of David, the son of Abraham -- David being the greatest king of Israel and prototype of the royal Messiah, and Abraham the father not just of all Jews, but of the "people of God," whose faithfulness was accounted as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).  My study Bible comments that Matthew's genealogy reveals that the Son of God so identifies with the human condition that He takes it all on Himself and become part of it.  It notes for us that Christ's ancestry includes both righteous and wicked people, faithful kings and murderers, Jews and Gentiles, kings and peasants.  

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"  For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; make His paths straight.'"  My study Bible comments that the wilderness of Judea is the barren region descending from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea.  The preparation for the Savior's ministry begins with John the Baptist's call to repent.  Repentance, which accompanies faith, is a total about-face.  The word in Greek means literally "change of mind," or more generally, to turn around.  My study Bible characterizes repentance as a radical change of one's spirit, mind, thought, and heart, a complete reorientation of the whole of one's life.  It is the needed first step in the way of the LORD.  Moreover, my study Bible adds, it is accompanied by the confession of sins and the act of baptism (see the final verse in today's reading), and followed by a life filled with fruits which are worthy of this change (see verse 8, part of tomorrow's reading).  The Gospel quotes from Isaiah 40:3, which appears in this "beginning" of the story of Christ's ministry in all four Gospels (see also Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4; John 1:23).  

Now John himself was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.  My study Bible explains that John's ascetic life conformed to that of the Jewish sects such as the Essenes, who lived in the wilderness and whose purpose was to prepare for the coming Kingdom of God.  John's clothing was typical of a prophet, and most clearly resembled that of Elijah (2 Kings 1:8).  The monastic movement in the early Church, my study Bible adds, was patterned after John manner of life. 
 
Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.   My study Bible says that the confession of sins is essential to baptism under both the Old Covenant and the New.  But John's baptism was a sign only of repentance and the forgiveness of sins.  It did not confer the power of total regeneration nor adoption as a child of God as does Christian baptism (see verse 11).  

As noted above, Matthew's genealogy of Jesus Christ begins by noting Christ as a son of David.  This is another title for the Messiah ("Son of David").  In fact, in several places in Matthew's Gospel, people use this title in addressing Jesus; see Matthew 9:27, 15:22, 20:30.  But perhaps for today it's important to place a focus on the true beginning of the genealogy, which starts with Abraham, the father of all Jews, the first patriarch.  As we commented already, Genesis 15:6 tells us of Abraham, "And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness."  This is highly important, because as patriarch of all Jews (and even of faithful people to come out of the Gentiles), Abraham is not accounted as righteous by God because he followed and kept the Law or Torah perfectly.  This is long before the Torah existed, and before Moses was born.  Abraham is the father of all the faithful because of his own faithfulness.  He responded to God's call to him by being faithful in what God asked him to do.  It is as profoundly simple as that.  David also is the epitome of a faithful king.  If we look at both of these men, however, we do not see perfect men.  We see people who have failed on occasion, and who have sinned.  All of this is important because these ancestors of Christ have nonetheless lived their faith, they have exercised what many would call "faithfulness" by living that faith, and thus righteousness is reckoned to them -- as it can and must also be reckoned to us.  In John's chapter 6, after being fed by Jesus in the wilderness, the people seek to make Him their king, and they pursue Him.  But He turns to them and tells them that they're simply after Him because He gave them food.  He teaches them, "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."  They then ask Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?"  Jesus answers, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."  In Greek, that word for "believe" does not simply convey an intellectual idea we agree with.  It is, at its root, a word meaning trust.  This trust is what faithfulness is all about -- a loyalty to God, a deeply willingness to please and obey the things of God.  This is what true faith and faithfulness and trust is all about.  Jesus asks the people to put their trust in Him, and to live that trust.  As my study Bible's comments allude in speaking of the baptism of John the Baptist, John comes into this beginning of Christ's ministry in the world to prepare the people for the Messiah, and John teaches them repentance, giving them a baptism of repentance.  This is to turn and to face the Lord and receive Him.  But Jesus will give us Holy Baptism, so that we may receive the Holy Spirit, the Helper or Counselor, the great gift to us of help for our own faithfulness, so that we might be righteous in the same way as the patriarch Abraham, and by adoption become "sons of God."  Faithfulness remains the thread that carries us through all the Bible, and to Christ, making us a part of His family tree by adoption.  St. Paul uses the analogy of an olive tree in Romans 11, to speak to those believing Gentiles who've been "grafted on" to a cultivated tree from a wild one -- meaning they who once did not live in obedience and faithfulness to God now may pursue and live such faithfulness.  Let us consider the faithfulness that runs all through this tree, how we become "children of God," and a part of the people of God.  Let us remember that it is lived faithfulness and trust in Christ that constitutes righteousness in the sight of God, as we go through Matthew's Gospel.  St. John the Baptist does his part in this great economy of salvation; he is faithful to the part God gives him to play.  May we all choose to do likewise.

And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes

 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.  

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

Yesterday we started reading the Gospel according to St. Mark:   The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  As it is written in the Prophets:   "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You."  "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; make His paths straight.' "  John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.  Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.  Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.  I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."  It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.  Then a voice came  from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.
 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel." My study Bible tells us that Mark's written emphasis on John being put in prison before Jesus begins preaching reveals  that a key purpose of the old covenant -- preparing the people for Christ -- had been completed (Galatians 4:1-5).  Once Christ came, then, the time of preparation was fulfilled.  My study Bible also notes that to repent is to do a total "about-face."  In Greek, "repentance" is μετανοια/metanoia, and it means literally to "change one's mind."  To repent is a radical change of one's spirit, mind, thought, and heart -- a complete reorientation to a life centered in Christ.  Therefore, it's something that can be ongoing throughout our lives.
 
And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.   John's Gospel makes it clear that these men had already heard the preaching of St. John the Baptist (and were earlier his followers) and had been prepared to accept Christ immediately (see John 1:29-51).  Because of this they were prepared to accept Christ immediately.  Although they were illiterate and unlearned in religion, my study Bible says, these "people of the land" whom Jesus calls will be revealed at Pentecost to be the wisest of all. 

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.   We see the word immediately occurring several times already in this first chapter of St. Mark's Gospel.  My study Bible comments that it occurs almost forty times in this Gospel, nearly all of them before Christ's entrance into Jerusalem at Holy Week.  This sense of urgency and purpose as Christ journeys toward Jerusalem in order to fulfill His mission of redeeming the world fills St. Mark's Gospel, helping to make it both the shortest and most direct of the Gospels.  Here, Jesus begins teaching and healing on the Sabbaths, as St. Ambrose of Milan says, to show that "the new creation began where the old creation ceased."

And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  The prophets of old and the teachers of Christ's day taught in the third person, either quoting from Scripture ("the Lord says") or the commentary of a famous rabbi.  But Christ teaches in the first person, speaking of His own authority.  
 
Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.   As if to confirm His teaching with authority, Christ heals a man and casts out an unclean spirit, who recognizes and obeys Christ's command to "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  But even with evident authority, Christ wishes His identity as Messiah to remain unspoken until the proper time.  My study Bible says this refusal to fully disclose His messianic identity is foreseen by Isaiah (Isaiah 42:1-4).  It gives several reasons for this secrecy:  first, the growing hostility of the religious leaders; second, the people's misunderstanding of the Messiah as an earthly, political leader; and finally, Christ's desire to evoke genuine faith not based only on marvelous signs.  

One thing we may notice already in St. Mark's Gospel is a line of delineation, a sort of separating out of one thing from another.  Often, making something sacred is aligned with "setting apart."  In Genesis we read that all was chaos until God began on the first day to separate one thing from another, such as the water from the land, and so to put things into order.  In this sense of putting things in order out of chaos, we should remember that Christ is also called the Logos (John 1:1), the Word.  His authority isn't simply one of power and control, nor a kind of assigned role or elected office by popular acclaim.  Christ's authority comes "of Himself," so to speak.  His very power is the power to set in order, to give meaning, to put things right, to make sense of things so that life can thrive and blossom.  One way things are set in order is that Christ is notably master of time.  Things must happen at the right time, and in the right order.  Moses and the Law came first, preparing the people for Christ.  But now that John is imprisoned, it is time for His public ministry, and Jesus preaches, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."   The word repent (a command here, if we may so note) is itself one that delineates boundaries, sets down priorities, and reorients all toward this singular pole of the truth and the Source of good.  The gospel or "good news" is the place all eyes should go, and all ears should hear.  The difference between Christ and the unclean spirits makes the difference clear; even the unclean spirits recognize Jesus' authority as that of the Holy One of God, and fear the time has come for their destruction. Even in this spiritual sense of the unseen (according to human eyes), things are put in order, set apart, a line is drawn, and Christ's authority is exercised for a purpose, to heal so that creation may flourish and grow.  Christ's authority is the center and the focus of this action of the good, that which sets apart, puts in reasonable order, gives clarity, and allows room for life to bloom -- and all of this is linked to truth, to our understanding of what is the truth.  It is an illustration of Christ's statement about Himself, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6), for in Him, His authority, and the order He establishes, we see all of these set down and revealed to us.   Ultimately, what Jesus' ministry has begun to do is to establish why we try to reach toward Him as our goal in our lives and in terms of our faith and even or communities.  In other words, in our communion with Him, and a deepening reconciliation and union to Christ, we find the "good order" we need in our lives in order to have life abundantly.  Using His authority, Christ commands the disciples, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  It is in that growing communion and reconciliation to Him that these disciples become the fishers of men that it is possible for them to be.  Let us follow their example.

Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand

 
 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.  And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
    "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
    By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles:
    The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
    And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
    Light has dawned."
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Yesterday we read that, after His baptism, Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.  Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."  But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"  Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.  For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and,'In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"  Jesus said, to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'"  Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.  And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."  Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan!  For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"  Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. 
 
Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.  And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:  "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: . . . "   My study Bible comments here that the term Galilee of the Gentiles is an indication that many non-Jews lived in the region.  As it had a mixed population, Galilee was not considered to be a genuinely Jewish land, although many Gentile residents had converted to Judaism during the Maccabean period.  Since many of the Jews there had been influenced by Greek (Hellenistic) culture and customs, they were generally considered second-class citizens by the Jews of Judea.  

"The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."  My study Bible explains here that darkness means ungodliness.  Here it is meant to represent the Gentiles' unawareness of God and the Jews being under the shadow of the Old Covenant.  To sit in darkness means to be overcome by spiritual ignorance.  The great light is the gospel of Jesus Christ.  

From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."  Like that of John the Baptist (see this reading), Christ's first word is to "Repent."   To call to "repent" is a call back to communion with God, a reorientation of one's life toward God, and a future which bears spiritual fruits worthy of such.  But in this case, the call comes from Christ, with whom the kingdom of heaven is always present, wherever He is.

Here is the beginning of Jesus' public ministry.   Each of our readings so far has included quotations from Old Testament Scripture, as if to make us surely understand how the New is the fulfillment of the Old.  Here the text begins Christ's ministry with a quotation from Isaiah 9:1-2.  And there is another important sense of "handing off" here that starts right from the beginning.  Jesus begins His ministry, according to Matthew, when He heard that John had been put in prison.  John is the last in line (and considered to be the greatest) of the Old Testament prophets, and Jesus begins His own public ministry when He knows that John has been put in prison by Herod Antipas.  Herod Antipas is the "king" or tetrarch of Galilee, and it is also here where Jesus has chosen to begin His ministry.  The sense of this place, called "Galilee of the Gentiles" by Isaiah, is important, as Jesus has grown up in Galilee, despite ancestral ties to Bethlehem of Judea.  Galilee is also the place where John the Baptist will meet his martyrdom (Matthew 14:1-12).  There is clearly an important tie here between old and new in the sense that while David the king came from Christ's ancestral home of Bethlehem (in which Jesus was born), now Christ, the "son of David," comes from "Galilee of the Gentiles" -- and the New Covenant will go out to the entire Greek-speaking world (the international language of its time), taking this lineage with it to all the world, even in fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham that "in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed" (see Genesis 12:1-3).  St. Paul explains, "For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith" (Romans 4:13).  So Christ's call to repentance is an echo of all the prophets that have always come throughout the history in the Scriptures, God's call from the beginning to wayward human beings.  But this call is also new, in the sense that it comes in a new fulfillment of what has come before, that it is a call to the righteousness of faith for all people, and will only be fulfilled as such.  Christ's call to repentance is an expansion and renewal of covenant for a new people in which, as St. Paul so memorably has written, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28), for "Christ is all and in all" (Colossians 3:11).  Today that call to repentance, the about-face in which we "remember God" and seek to do so at all times, that continually calls us to the righteousness of faith, is being sent into all the world in all kinds of ways, even through the new media available.  But we have to ask ourselves at the same time how different the world is from the time of Christ's birth.  We still have empires and wars and material might that grows greater and bigger still.  And yet, we still have small peoples -- and maybe in particular those of Christian faith, even descendants of those who were the first peoples in the world to embrace Christianity -- who are being targeted for their faith, even victims of genocidal policies who are set apart by that faith.  Today, despite worldwide attention in the previous century to problems of warfare and attacks upon civilians, the establishment of legal conventions against such violence and even formally against genocide, we have ongoing persecution and new martyrs of the Christian faith.  Even today, under cover of broader and greater wars, violence against the innocent rages and other interests take the stage before actual prevention.  Ultimately, it is our righteousness of faith upon which we must depend, Christ's words to us that call us to repentance, a constant turning to God, to reliance upon God, to facing our Lord -- for where He is, there is the kingdom of heaven.  So we turn to Him, and we heed His call, which is always new and renewing for all of us, for all of our lives, for at each moment we need what He has to give us.  The struggle which figured as great example for us in yesterday's reading (above) remains the same.  It's still a battle "against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places," as St. Paul said (Ephesians 6:12).  Only the names and faces change, but so much remains the same.  Christ has warned us that our age would be one of wars and rumors of wars, of upheavals and shocking sights until His return, through which we must endure in our faith.  There is still the shadow of darkness and death, and there is still the light.  Let us always remember our struggle for faith, and that He calls us always to repentance, to Himself, today and always, for He is all and in all.

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel

 
 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him. 

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  As it is written in the Prophets:  "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You."  "The voice of one crying in the wilderness:  'Prepare the way of the LORD; make His paths straight.' John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.  Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.   Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  And he preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.  I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."  It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.  Then a voice came from heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."  Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. 
 
  Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  My study Bible comments that Mark's written emphasis on John being put in prison before Jesus begins preaching reveals that a key purpose of the old covenant -- to prepare the people for Christ -- had been completed (Galatians 4:1-5).  Once Christ came, the time of preparation was fulfilled.  To repent is to do a total "about-face," my study Bible explains.  The word in Greek (μετανοια/metanoia) literally means to "change one's mind."  My study Bible says that repentance is a radical change of one's spirit, mind, thought, and heart -- a complete reorientation to a life centered in Christ.  
 
 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."  They immediately left their nets and followed Him.  When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.  And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.  My study Bible reminds us that these first disciples had already heard the preaching of John the Baptist, and so they are prepared to immediately leave their nets and follow Him (see John 1:35-50).  It adds that, although they were illiterate and unlearned in religion, these "people of the land" whom Jesus calls will be revealed at Pentecost to be the wisest of all (see Acts 2).

Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.  My study Bible comments that the word immediately occurs nearly forty times in Mark's Gospel, almost all of them before Christ's entrance into Jerusalem.  This sense of urgency and  purpose as Christ goes toward Jerusalem to fulfill His mission of redeeming the world helps make Mark's account not only the shortest but also the most direct of the four Gospels.

And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit.  And he cried out, saying, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?  What new doctrine is this?  For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."  And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.  Christ's first public preaching astonished the people, because He teaches as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  My study Bible explains that both the prophets of old and the teachers of Christ's day taught in the third person (e.g. "The Lord says").  But Christ teaches in the first person ("I say to you," as in Matthew 5).   Christ commands the unclean spirit to "Be quiet, and come out of him!"   My study Bible comments that our Lord's refusal to fully disclose His identity as Messiah is foreseen by Isaiah (Isaiah 42:1-4).  There are several reasons for this.  We will see the growing hostility of the religious leaders; the people's misunderstanding of the Messiah as an earthly, political leader will cause problems and false expectations; and Christ's desire is to evoke genuine faith which is not based only on marvelous signs.  Isaiah prophesies about the Servant; referring first to Christ, and then by extension to all who follow Him.
 
In today's reading, we can see a clear kind of evolution of Christ's ministry, a pattern of a beginning and expansion.  But, as my study Bible points out, the beginning isn't really a beginning, but one that was made possible by what came before as preparation, and that is the whole history of the people of God, of Israel and the God of Israel.  John the Baptist is the last in a long line of prophets of the Old Testament.  He tells us all directly what this pattern of both fulfillment and beginning is about:  "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."  So perhaps today we might pause to think about what it means to evolve, and why when we look at patterns -- such as in our reading for today -- we can see what look like stepping stones on a way somewhere.  There is a foundation of the spirituality embedded in the ministry of John the Baptist, who introduces Christ's first disciples to Jesus (see the excerpt from John's Gospel), so that later they may "immediately" leave their boats and follow Christ when He calls them to His ministry.  From there Jesus begins to teach in the Sabbaths in the synagogue at Capernaum, and almost as a natural response to that, the unclean spirits -- usually hidden from our awareness -- begin to respond to the presence of Jesus.  One thing seems to proceed to the other, and it's presented to us as a kind of road, a pattern that will be followed through to the end.  That is, to Christ's Passion, which is, of course, another beginning, and another foundation for something new, and growing, and proceeding ahead -- which is the period in which we currently live.  One may stop and wonder just how all of this evolves, and of course we ascribe it to the work of God in the world.  But even that is something that grows and expands, and takes on surprising new turns and manifestations.  In our recent readings at the end of Luke's Gospel, we read about the Promise given of the Holy Spirit.  In the theological language of the Orthodox Church, grace is spoken of as the energies of God.  That is, grace is the form that God's energies take on in the world, through which we can know God.  This is so even though we cannot know God in God's essence, as God "knows" God, so to speak.  This action of the Holy Spirit in the world is something to which the Scriptures and the Church testify, but the evolution of God's work in the world also contends with the patterns of rebellion against God, with the fact that "an enemy" has also sown seeds in this world (see the parable of the Wheat and the Tares).  So what we might expect as a clear or straight path is not really precisely our earthly idea of clear and straight.  It must also deal with the "enemy" who sowed other seeds in this world.  It must also contend with, for instance, the unclean spirit, who calls out to Jesus, "Let us alone!  What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?  Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are -- the Holy One of God!"  This becomes a part of the path, a part of the story, as Jesus must Himself assert His authority over the spirit.  Importantly, in our own lives, we should see our paths similarly.  There might be all kinds of things that seem to tempt us to go this way or that, distract us with their drama, or with an appeal that says we "should" be doing some other thing.  In the parable of the Sower, Jesus talks about distractions as thorns that choke the word, "the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things" (Mark 4:19).  And yet, He has given us the Promise, His Spirit.  He has given us His word.  He has given us the saints, and He has given us the Church.  Our paths might not be straight, and the world may not beat a path to our door as a result, but He gives us the grace, and shows us the way to follow Him.  This particular time is always at hand, and John's words remain true for this always-new beginning, even today:  "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."
