Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?

 
 Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there.  Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus' feet, and He healed them.  So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.  
 
 Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat.  And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way."  Then His disciples aid to Him, "Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?"  Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?"  And they said, "Seven, and a few little fish."  So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.  And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude.  So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.  Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.  And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala.

Yesterday we read that, after a dispute with the Pharisees who came from Jerusalem, Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon.  And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David!  My daughter is severely demon-possessed."  But He answered her not a word.  And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, "Send her away, for she cries out after us."  But He answered and said, "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."  Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, help me!"  But He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs."  And she said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."  Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith!  Let it be to you as you desires."  And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

 Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat.  And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way."  Then His disciples aid to Him, "Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?"  Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?"  And they said, "Seven, and a few little fish."  So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.  And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude.  So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.  Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.  And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala.  This is a second, separate feeding of a multitude that Christ has done in the wilderness, and it should not be confused with the first in this reading.  They should not be confused with one another as they are two distinct miracles, which Christ will refer to as such later (Matthew 16:8-10).  My study Bible asks us to look at the variance in the number of loaves, for it is significant.  In the first instance, there were five loaves, which symbolize the Law (the first five books of the Old Testament, the Torah or Pentateuch), while here there are seven.  Seven is a number symbolic of completeness; here it indicates spiritual perfection.  So, in the first miraculous feeding in the wilderness, Christ reveals Himself as fulfilling the Law.  But here He shows that it is He who grants spiritual perfection.  It's also important to note that these crowds had been with Him for three days; this is the same number of days Jesus would rest in the tomb.  My study Bible adds that participation in Christ's perfection can only come through being united to His death (see Romans 6:3-5). 
 
We might well ask the question, why two feedings in the wilderness?  Why would it be important for Christ to make one miraculous feeding of five thousand by multiplication of loaves and fishes, and then another, feeding four thousand men (and more women and children)?  My study Bible gives us an explanation in the symbolism of the numbers.  The first was symbolic of Christ as fulfillment of the Law, and the long-awaited Messiah in this sense.  In so doing, He is also the Lord who gave the Law.  The second offers us the dawning of the new covenant, spiritual perfection in Christ.  The three days, as my study Bible said, preview the three days that Christ will spend in the tomb, and through which He will defeat death on all of our behalf.  We enter into and participate in Christ's life, death, and Resurrection through Holy Baptism, and this leads us into Christ's life for us, through faith and grace.  The number four thousand is highly symbolic of the whole world; four is already consonant with the four corners of the earth, the four directions, and the four corners of the Cross, which is for the whole world.  Multiply that by one thousand and it teaches us the infinite resourcefulness of Christ to reach every person, and for all the future (and indeed, even to those who had died before His coming into the world).  So the two miraculous multiplications of food not only preview for us the Eucharist, but they teach us of the progression of spiritual history, the fulfillment of the Old, and the offering of the New for all, for the whole world.  Significantly, the first crowd of five thousand was among a predominantly Jewish region; here He is in a region of mixed Gentiles and Jews.  Coming right after our reading in which the Canaanite woman received a healing for her daughter, this is also significant in that it indicates the gospel going to the world, including the Gentiles.  Let us remember who feeds us the bread from heaven, for He is the bread of heaven and fills us with good things for the life of the world.

Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick

 
 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office.  And He said to him, "Follow Me."  So he arose and followed Him.  Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples.  And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"  When Jesus heard that, He said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  But go and learn what this means:  'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.'  For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."
 
Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?"  And Jesus said to them, "Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?  But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.  No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse.  Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined.  But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."

Yesterday we read that, after His exorcism of the Gergesene demoniacs, Jesus got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own city.  Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed.  When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you."  And at once some of the scribes said within themselves, "This Man blasphemes!"  But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts?  For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and walk'?  But that you may know that the son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins" -- then He said to the paralytic, "Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house."  And he arose and departed to his house.  Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.
 
  As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office.  And He said to him, "Follow Me."  So he arose and followed Him.  Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples.  And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"  When Jesus heard that, He said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  But go and learn what this means:  'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.'  For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."  My study Bible reminds us that Matthew (the author of this Gospel) is also named Levi (Mark 2:14).  It explains that Roman overlords assigned specific areas to Jewish tax collectors, who were free to collect extra revenues for their own profit.  Because of their collaboration with the occupying Romans, their fraud, and their corruption in extorting money from their own people, they were hated by fellow Jews and considered unclean (Matthew 11:19).  By dining with them and accepting a tax collector as a disciple ("Follow Me"), Jesus offends the Pharisees.  But His defense is both simple and teaches us about what He is here as Incarnate Jesus for:  He goes where the need of the physician is the greatest.  Jesus quotes from Hosea 6:6, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice."  This is not a rejection of sacrifice per se, my study Bible explains, but it shows that mercy is a higher priority (see Psalm 51).  
 
 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?"  And Jesus said to them, "Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?  But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.  No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse.  Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined.  But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."  My study Bible tells us that the Jews typically fasted twice per week (Luke 18:12), on Monday and Thursday.  Moreover, there were regularly observed or occasionally proclaimed public fasts (2 Chronicles 20:3; Ezra 8:21-23; Esther 4:16; Joel 2:15).  This was particularly important on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:31-34) and in times of mourning (Zechariah 7:5, 8:19). But the day of the Messiah was viewed as a wedding feast; that is, a time of joy and gladness.   Here Jesus is proclaiming that day, and declaring Himself to be the Messiah/Bridegroom.  For Christians, my study Bible explains, fasting is not gloomy but desirable, it is a "bright sadness," for in fasting we gain self-control and we prepare ourselves for the Wedding Feast.  The old garment and old wineskins stand for the Old Covenant and the Law, which are viewed as imperfect and temporary.  The new wineskins are the New Covenant and those in Christ.  The new wine is the Holy Spirit dwelling within renewed people, who cannot be constrained by the old precepts of the Law.  
 
Jesus says, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  But go and learn what this means:  'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.'  For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."  In so doing, He frames His entire ministry in terms of healing, for He is clearly equating salvation from sin, and repentance, as part of the work of healing, and what a physician offers to those who are "sick."  In yesterday's reading and commentary, we discussed the metaphorical parallel between paralysis and sin, a sort of paralysis of the soul.  When we consider being stuck in sin or harmful habits and behaviors as a kind of paralysis of the soul, we begin to understand repentance as remedy and medicine.  Repentance is the way to transform and transcend behaviors and ways of thinking that keep us stuck in a pattern that is harmful or disordered, for repentance literally means "change of mind" (the Greek word is μετανοια/metanoia).  Repentance is quite simply a turning away from what is harmful and turning toward Christ instead.  It is a way to become unstuck, and moving toward the proper and healthful goal for all of us, which is ultimately union with Christ our Creator, who gives us true identity.  In the Orthodox tradition, the Church is often considered to be a hospital, reflective of what we find in the Gospels.  In today's reading, Jesus refers to Himself a physician, of whom those who are sick have need.  In the final verses of today's reading, He gives a vivid illustration of the pattern of change involved in spiritual growth, the transition from the old to the new, the opening up of the gospel to those who may come in through repentance.  Fasting will indeed be part of the New Covenant Church, but it -- like everything else -- will be transfigured in the light of Christ the Bridegroom, as we await His return.  Let us turn toward Him and fill the new wineskins for the new wine.

I am with you always, even to the end of the age

 
 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.  When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.  And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."  Amen.

The lectionary has been taking us through St. Matthew's Gospel, and recently into the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 - 7).  But this week, it has been preparing us for the Feast of the Ascension, which is today in the Western Churches (and the Armenian Apostolic Church), while the Eastern Orthodox will celebrate a week from today.  Yesterday we read that, while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, "What do you think about the Christ?  Whose Son is He?"  They said to Him, "The Son of David."  He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying:  'The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool"'?  If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his Son?"  And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.  In tomorrow's lectionary reading, we will resume readings in chapter 7, the final verses of the Sermon on the Mount.  
 
  Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.  When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.  And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."  Here Christ declares that the authority that was His by nature in His divinity is now also possessed by His glorified human nature, my study Bible comments.  It says that this human nature has now trampled the final enemy -- death (1 Corinthians 15:20-28).  
 
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, . . . "  This is known as the Great Commission.  It is Christ's final commandment given on earth.  My study Bible comments that it is to be lived out in the Church until Christ returns again.  To make disciples is not possible in the strength of human beings, but only in the power of God.  
 
 ". . . teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."  Amen.  My study Bible notes that Christ Himself is present in each believer and in the Church always, both personally and in the Holy Spirit, for neither can be separated from the other.  To the end of the age doesn't imply that we'll be separated from Christ at the end of the world.  He is with us now, and forever, and unto the ages of ages.  Amen.
 
What does it mean that He will be with us to the end of the age?   The first thing we must remember is that we are in the age that Christ's Incarnation has initiation.   And this age -- the entire Christian era on these terms -- is the age of the "end times."  This is not a short period before time and the world as we know it ends, except perhaps in consideration of an eternal universe, but not on earthly terms.  The end times are the entire age that Christ has brought into the world, and will last until His return.  Thus He speaks of the end of the age which has a particular meaning in the context of the Church.  It is most important that He is with us, for without Him, what can we do?  What are we capable of without Him?  It is Christ who has initiated this age, He who is our Shepherd (our good shepherd; see John 10:1-16, especially verse 11).   Again, without Him, what can we do?  He makes it possible to be His disciples, He sends us His Holy Spirit, He prays to (or asks) the Father on our behalf, requesting such good help to be given to us (John 14:15-18).  He preaches also that where two or three are gathered together in His name, there He is also in the midst of them (Matthew 18:20).  So He shepherds us through this time in which we, as His people and His sheep, await His return, which will be the end of the age.  Therefore this Great Commission is what we do, and how we are to keep ourselves occupied and living His commandments until His return.  We note that a significant part of this commission is the responsibility of "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you."  But how does one teach anything except by living it ourselves?  So this commission is not simply about finding disciples, but about we ourselves being the very objects others may observe and turn to by living His love and His commandments for us ourselves, as He teaches in the Sermon on the Mount (see Matthew 5:13-16, especially verse 16).  As we've observed in recent readings and commentary, Jesus warns us most scathingly against hypocrisy in the example He makes of the Pharisees (Matthew 23), so we know that teaching His commandments means living them, doing them, truly living our faith.  For this, too, He is with us always, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit.  For we are not alone in Christ.

 "But whoever causes these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.  If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.  It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched - where 
'Their worm does not die,
And the fire is not quenched.'

Yesterday we read that Jesus and the disciples passed through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know it.  For He taught His disciples and said to them, "The Son of man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him.  And after He is killed, He will rise the third day."  But they did not understand this saying, and were afraid to ask Him. Then He came to Capernaum.  And when He was in the house He asked them, "What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?"  But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest.  And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."  Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them.  And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, "Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me."  Now John answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us."  But Jesus said, "Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me.  For he who is not against us is on our side.  For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward."
 
  "But whoever causes these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea."  It's important to remember that in the present context Jesus is speaking to these apostles who will become the leaders of His Church, as now He is beginning to move toward Jerusalem and His final confrontation with the religious leaders which will result in His Passion.  My study Bible comments that little ones include all who have childlike humility and simplicity; in other words, all who are poor in spirit.  Let us understand also that these words are a continuation of His teachings in yesterday's reading, above, in which He spoke to the disciples of true greatness as service and humility, and the importance of how they will receive the "little ones" in the Church, even little children.
 
 "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.  It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched - where 'Their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'  And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off.  It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched -- where 'Their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'  And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.  It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire -- where 'Their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'"  My study Bible calls this repeated reference to mutilation an illustration of decisive action to avoid sin.  Christ is not advocating literal amputation here.  He is speaking of the utmost caution He can muster for preventing abuses of the "little ones" in the Church.  A hand can reach out to strike, or to take what does not belong to it.  A foot may trespass over important boundary lines, or kick someone who is down.  An eye looks with envy, or with malice, or with covetousness of any kind.  There are many more ways we can look at these metaphors, but it is important to note that in all cases He is warning against buses and against scandalizing the little ones in the Church through abuses of power of various types.  The repeated warning of the possibility of going "to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched - where Their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched'" is a warning they -- nor we who descend from them in the Church -- can forget through its vividness and repetition.  Jesus takes these words from the prophesy of Isaiah; see Isaiah 66:22-24.
 
 "For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.  Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it?  Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another."  My study Bible explains that to be seasoned with fire means being tested in order to see if one's faith and works are genuine (see 1 Corinthians 3:11-15).  The image comes from tests of purification for metals such as gold, in which impurities would burn away through fire.  In saying that every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt, Jesus quotes from Leviticus 2:13.  There, salt stands for the remembrance of God's covenant with God's people.  
 
Jesus uses the image of salt, in the final verse in today's reading, to remind these disciples of covenant and loyalty.  To have salt in ourselves as Christ's disciples means to be loyal; to be loyal to Him first of all and His commandments, but in so doing we are loyal to one another through these teachings regarding how we treat one another in the Church.  In particular, of course, He stresses the most extreme caution against the abuse of power against "little ones," that is,  humble people in the Church.  If we understand the social structures of groups, then we are to perceive that a "little one," or one who is humble, can be anybody given a particular power dynamic.  In our schools and online, we have in the modern world repeatedly heard about precautions against bullying.  This is nothing new to our world, and yet we seem to be taken aback by its rampant use among social cultures in many forms.  But Christ's warnings go to steps far deeper and more potent than a modern social construct or admonition, for He is speaking of spiritual peril to those who are His disciples.  Abuse of power in His Church against the little ones takes on such a shape as to be worthy of a worse fate than if "a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea." At Christ's time, a millstone was a large circular stone used to grind down grain.  Driven by animal or human labor; they weighed hundreds of pounds.  This seemingly impossible fate described by Christ means simply certain death; He terms it to be, in fact, "worse."  Then there is the repeated warning of hell fire, in a vivid repetition of the words from Isaiah's prophecy, in which the Lord, now victorious over all things in the ultimate fulfillment of the purposes of God, looks upon those who refused His word and transgressed against Him.   The description is one not simply of eternal torment in some physical sense, but in a spiritual one, in which the shame of an entire created order plays a part in their final state.  It's doubtful there could be any more direly descriptive warnings than these that Christ gives to His disciples and future leaders of His Church, and all because they were arguing over who would be the greatest in the kingdom they imagine is coming.  So let us take Him as seriously as His words teach us He is, and regard our own conduct in living our faith, in the life of our Church.  It's all too easy to forget His teachings when power plays a role, when human beings are tempted to take shortcuts to the Kingdom.  My study Bible adds a final caveat to Christ's words about cutting off a hand or foot or losing an eye being preferable to such destruction.   It notes that these words, besides indicating a sharp need to curb our own harmful impulses, also apply to harmful relationships that must be severed for the salvation of all parties (see Luke 14:26; 1 Corinthians 5:5).  Therefore we look to ourselves and our lives, for He speaks to all of us, each of us, and not simply those who would lead in the Church.  His words reach down into our own hearts, the places others can't see, but have meaning for all.

Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons

 
 But Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea.  And a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, and from Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and beyond the Jordan; and those from Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they heard how many things He was doing, came to Him.  So He told His disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him because of the multitude, lest they should crush Him.  For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him.  And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, "You are the Son of God."  But He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known.

On Saturday we read that Jesus and the discples went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to pluck heads of grain.  And the Pharisees said to Him, "Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"  But He said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him:  how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?"  And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.  Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath."  And He entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand.  So they watched Him closely, whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.  And He said to the man who had the withered hand, "Step forward."  Then He said to them, "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?"  But they kept silent.  And when He had looked around at them with anger, being grieved by the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand."  And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored as whole as the other.  Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.
 
  But Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea.  And a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, and from Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and beyond the Jordan; and those from Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they heard how many things He was doing, came to Him.  So He told His disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him because of the multitude, lest they should crush Him.  For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him.  And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, "You are the Son of God."  But He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known.   My study Bible notes that Jesus withdrew both because the Pharisees were planning to destroy Him (though it was not time for Him to die; see Saturday's reading, above) and also in order to preach in other places.  Once again we note Christ's urge to secrecy regarding His identity which the unclean spirits know; He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known
 
 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted.  And they came to Him.  Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons:  Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, "Sons of Thunder"; Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.  These men are to be His chosen disciples (that they might be with Him), and also His apostles (that He might send them out to preach).  These two terms are used interchangeably for the twelve.  Disciple means "learner," and apostle means "one sent out."  Jesus gave them power to perform miracles, my study Bible says, while He performed them by His own power.  The names of the Twelve are not the same in all lists, for many people had more than one name.  
 
We notice how Christ's ministry unfolds.  A great multitude now follows Christ from all over the territories where Jews live in the region: from Galilee, and from Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and beyond the Jordan; and those from Tyre and Sidon.  These are Jewish territories such as Judea and Jerusalem, places of mixed populations like Galilee, and also Gentile territories of Tyre and Sidon.   These come to Him and have all heard of Him and the things He does; His reputation now means His very life is threatened with all those who crowd in simply to touch Him.  It also seems to be getting harder to keep His messianic identity secret, as the demons reveal who He is when they cry out.  All of this is happening at the same time the religious authorities grow more hostile to Him and plan to destroy Him, together with the Herodians (see yesterday's reading, above).  The Herodians are the supporters of Herod's regime, which is nominally Jewish but rules for Rome.  So the state power now also has taken notice of Him.  Amidst this mixed bag of responses to Christ's ministry, Jesus takes a bold step forward.  He goes up on a high mountain, indicating an encounter with God, and a signal that nothing Jesus does is without the close and prayerful collaboration with God the Father, and He unfolds a new movement within His ministry.  His growing popularity seemingly becomes a signal that it is time to spread, or perhaps more significantly, to share His power and distribute it (as eventually the Eucharist will be distributed).  From among His disciples He chooses twelve.  Significantly, of course, this is the number of the tribes or patriarchs of Israel.  These twelve will live with Him (and thereby be His disciples, learning everything from Him at close quarters), and eventually be sent out on missions by Him, carrying His word and -- again significantly -- His power out into the world.  It would seem at this point to go without saying that wherever Christ power extends, wherever His name and His reputation become known, there also opposition will spring up as well.  This remains true today as it was then, and we should take it as a given as a part of the Church.  For, as we can see, despite the opposition, Jesus presses on, and so this is His mission.  He continues to expand.  It's notable to understand, as my study Bible remarks, that Jesus shares His power with His chosen disciples (who become also apostles).  That is, my study Bible noted that Jesus used His power to perform His miracles, and whatever the disciples will do, it is through Christ sharing or distributing His power through them.  Also included in today's lectionary reading is a passage from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians.  St. Paul speaks of his coming to Corinth, and writes, "But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord wills, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power. For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power. What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?" (1 Corinthians 4:19-21).  Here St. Paul's letter seems to affirm for us this property of power -- shared by Christ -- as being the true marker of the kingdom of God.  In the case of what Christ distributes to the disciples who will become apostles, the emphasis is more on the authority He conveys to them to have power to command the demons to be cast out of those whom they afflict, but the effect of the two statements is the same.  There is a power to the word that St. Paul alludes to, and it is not merely in the repetition of words or the statements people make.  It is something -- just like the authority Christ gives to the apostles -- which carries the Kingdom with it.  Let us ponder this authority and power -- and the palpable presence of the Kingdom -- as we continue through Lent, and prepare for Easter and Resurrection ahead.

If you abide in My word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free

 
Then Jesus said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin.  Where I go you cannot come."  So the Jews said, "Will He kill Himself, because He says, 'Where I go you cannot come'?"  And He said to them, "You are from beneath; I am from above.  You are of this world; I am not of this world.  Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."  Then they said to Him, "Who are You?"  And Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.  I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him."  They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father. 
 
Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.   And He who sent Me is with Me.  The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him."  As He spoke these words, many believed in Him.  
 
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word,  you are my disciples indeed.  And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Yesterday we read that Jesus spoke to the religious leaders again, saying, "I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."  The Pharisees therefore said to Him, "You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not true."  Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I  know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.  You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.  And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.  It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.  I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me."  Then they said to Him, "Where is Your Father?"  Jesus answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father.  If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also."  These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.

 Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.   And He who sent Me is with Me.  The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him."  As He spoke these words, many believed in Him.  According to my study Bible, lift up has the double meaning here of being nailed to the Cross and of being exalted by God the Father upon the completion of His ministry.
 
 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word,  you are my disciples indeed."  To be a follower of Christ means to become one of His disciples.  My study Bible suggests that this is what Christ expects of all of His followers.  The word disciple literally means "learner."  We are all His pupils, and we are all to be continually learning from Him.  To abide in His word, my study Bible adds, is the responsibility of all believers; this is true of all, not just clergy or an elite class of zealots.
 
 "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."  The truth is a reference here to both the virtue of truth -- but even more essentially to Jesus Christ Himself (John 14:6).  To be free, my study Bible adds, means to be free from darkness, confusion, and lies (see yesterday's reading and commentary), as well as the freedom from the bondage of sin and death.  
 
 In our current readings, Jesus is attending the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem.  He has spoken vividly of Himself as the light of the world (in yesterday's reading, above), and in today's reading we find out more about what that means.  To abide in His word, as He teaches us to do, is also to walk in that light.  His is the light of life, that brings us the truth that makes us free:  free from the delusions of the world, the false things we might chase after, the passions that mislead us, idols that will take everything from us and defeat our spiritual intentions, the cares of this world that ensnare us and set us on the wrong track.  These are just some of the things Christ's light is here to illumine for us, and to help us find a way through the world on the sure footing He offers to those who would be His disciples.  If we think about it -- something we must do, given His word -- He frames this teaching in a particular way.  He doesn't just say, "Follow Me," as He did when He was first calling His disciples.  Now He is teaching them and us to abide in His word.  This word "abide" is His command, and it has several meanings.  It means to stay or remain in His word, to continue in it.  Keeping in mind that by now in Christ's ministry He is in His final year of His worldly life, we begin to hear notes that suggest He's preparing His disciples, and those who would be His followers, for the time to come, and for His departure from this world.  This is the context of today's reading, as Jesus nears the finish of this autumn feast (the Feast of Tabernacles) and begins to lay the foundation of understanding of the events that will take place the following Passover.  He warns those who fail to hear His word, "I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin.  Where I go you cannot come."  He speaks of judgment, and finally of the time He will be lifted up -- a reference to His Crucifixion.  Ultimately, He speaks to His followers, to those who believe in Him, even those among the rulers who believed Him:  "If you abide in My word,  you are my disciples indeed.  And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."  And this teaching, this command, is for us today -- we who believe and who are His followers.  We're to abide in His word, to live His teachings, to persist in seeking to live the life He has taught us to live, to try to understand and discern His commandments for us.  For it is in this persistence that we will grow in the ways we need to, to see our ways through the "thorns" that threaten to choke us, to find the light that leads the way -- the way, or road that is His.  To abide is to be persistent, to endure, to know that there is always more to learn, and that we need minds and hearts always open to His light and His word, and to the places He would lead us.  For we will always be His students, His disciples, and there will always be new things to learn.  Let us remember His command, and grow in His truth, and in true freedom.

You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with

 
 Now Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on the road and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify.  And the third day He will rise again."
 
Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him.  And He said to her, "What do you wish?"  She said to Him, "Grant that these two  sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom."  But Jesus answered and said, "You do not know what you ask.  Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?"  They said to Him, "We are able."  So He said to them, "You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father."  
 
And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers.  But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them.  Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.  And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave -- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

In yesterday's reading, Jesus gave us the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard:  "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.  Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.  And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.'  So they went.  Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.  And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said to them, 'Why have you been standing here idle all day?'  They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.'  He said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right you will receive.'  So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.'  And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius.  But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius.  And when they had received it, they complained against the landowner, saying, 'These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.'  But he answered one of them and said, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong.  Did you not agree with me for a denarius?  Take what is yours and go your way.  I wish to give to this last man the same as to you.  Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things?  Or is your eye evil because I am good?'  So the last will be first, and the first last.  For many are called, but few chosen." 
 
 Now Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on the road and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify.  And the third day He will rise again."  My study Bible comments that Christ's repeated prediction of His Passion is meant to encourage and strengthen the disciples for the terrifying events they would face (note that now Jesus is going up to Jerusalem).   According to Theophylact, it's as if Jesus were saying to them, "Think on all these [words and miracle], so that when you see me hanging on the Cross, you will not imagine that I am suffering because I am powerless to do otherwise."
 
 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him.  And He said to her, "What do you wish?"  She said to Him, "Grant that these two  sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom."  But Jesus answered and said, "You do not know what you ask.  Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?"  They said to Him, "We are able."  So He said to them, "You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father."  My study Bible comments that this question for temporal power and glory is unfitting for a disciple and it shows an earthly misunderstanding of the Kingdom of God.  Here, St. Matthew tells us that this is the mother of Zebedee's sons who is requesting this honor.  But John and James' own involvement is revealed in the Greek of the original text, as "you" is plural in Christ's response, "You do not know what you ask . . . " as well as in Mark 10:36.  Note here also that Christ calls His Crucifixion a cup and His death a baptism.  My study Bible explains that the Cross is a cup because Jesus drank it willingly (Hebrews 12:2).  His death is baptism in that He was completely immersed in it -- but it cleansed the world (Romans 6:3-6).  Christ's prophecy regarding the future participation of John and James Zebedee in the same cup and baptism portrays the life of persecution and martyrdom they would lead after Pentecost (John lived a long life of persecution and exile during the worst of the persecutions of the Church; James was the first apostle to be martyred; see Acts 12:1-2).  My study Bible further explains that Christ declaring that the places of honor in the Kingdom are not His to give does not mean that He lacks authority.  What it does mean is that they are not His to give arbitrarily.  In other words, these will be given to those for whom God has prepared them.  My study Bible asks us to note also that with regard to sitting as equals on the right and left hand of Christ in His Kingdom.  It cites St. John Chrysostom, who teaches that no one could possibly occupy such a position.  Regarding the highest places of honor that can be given to human beings, the icons of the Orthodox Churches universally depict the Virgin Mary (most blessed among women; Luke 1:28) and John the Baptist (greatest born of women; Matthew 11:11) in these places.  
 
 And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers.  But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them.  Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.  And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave -- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."  Again, Jesus emphasizes service over claims of greatness; His power is that which does good.  For many is an Aramaic expression which means "for all."  My study Bible comments that He corrects the disciples by first comparing them to the power-hungry Gentiles, whom they themselves considered to be an abomination, and contrasting them to Himself.  Christ serves us even though He is the Lord of all.  
 
Once again, Jesus is preparing the disciples for what is going to happen in the final week of His earthly life.  This takes place at the beginning of Christ's final journey, as Jesus sets His sights for Jerusalem and takes the disciples on the road which will lead them there.   This is His third prophesy to them of what will happen when they reach Jerusalem.  As the disciples do not clearly understand what is to happen there, they likely still believe and expect that Christ's Kingdom will be manifest as an earthly kingdom.  So, once again, this expectation leads to a question about greatness and position in Christ's kingdom (as in this reading previously).  Earlier, such a demand to know position in His kingdom led to Christ's lessons on humility and the treatment of the "little ones" in the Church, leading to His prescription for mutual correction in the Church.  Here, the issue of power comes up once again, and Christ contrasts the notion of leadership in the pagan Gentile world they know (and already abhor) with His sense of power and authority.  Christ shares His power with His disciples, His gift to us all through Baptism is the Holy Spirit.  He does not compel anyone to return His love.  So we must learn of Christ's authority and power, and even today, we are in this same spiritual struggle to take on His yoke and learn from Him (Matthew 11:29-30).  Of course, we know from their histories in the tradition of the Church that James and John both served Christ in the ways that He prophesies here.  As said above, James was the first apostle to be martyred, and John would go on to a long life of persecution, protecting and caring for the Theotokos, the Mother of God, Mary, Jesus' mother.  He would give the Church substantial literature, contributing to the Bible one Gospel, three Epistles, and the Book of Revelation, and so guiding and steering the Church even today!  Perhaps there is no greater lesson to us all than this consideration of James and John Zebedee and their own transfiguration through the Holy Spirit, their lives of service, and their unimaginable and, frankly, incalculable gift of their lives and works of faith for the Church, for us all.  Let us seek to be like their example, and cherish what they have done in service to us all.

This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him

 
 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him."  For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.  Because John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."  And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.  But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.  Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.  So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter."  And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.  So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.  And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.  Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Yesterday we read that when Jesus finished preaching in parables, He departed for His hometown of Nazareth.  When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, "Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?  Is this not the carpenter's son?  Is not His mother called Mary?  And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?  And His sisters, are they not all with us?  Where then did this Man get all these things?  So they were offended at Him.  But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house."  Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

The gruesome scene in this story always comes around to remind us of the dangers of martyrdom, which are present to every saint.  John's life is also reflective of the Cross, even before the Cross came, for we can find images and meanings in Christ from both the old and the new.  The eternal realities given to us through Christ are not simply part of His story, for His life alone on this earth.  For Christ's story is the story of the earth; Christ's story is the central event of spiritual history.  For us who believe in Christ and call ourselves His followers, He is this pivotal center, and all else revolves around Him.  Therefore the truth of His life as Incarnate Son is present to us in all the stories of holiness, in all the Scriptures, in one form and another.  In John the Baptist we see sacrifice and gruesome suffering.  We see the highest esteem and love from the people, for his holiness was apparent, and made him a revered figure in his own time.  We see someone willing to live and die for his mission from God, giving up all things in order to serve God.  As my study Bible says, his own integrity created this esteemed image in the eyes of the people.  John the Baptist is considered the last and greatest of the Old Testament type prophets.  His life speaks to us of a fearless mission to truly embody what it is to "speak truth to power," as the popular saying goes.  But his depth of reliance on and commitment to God means that this truth comes from God, and it is this appeal of God to the people, and to the powers that be, that John represents, and for which he was martyred.  In his martyrdom is a picture of the Cross before the Cross would come to all of us, so to speak.  He embodies what it is to live a life transfigured in the light of Christ, but in the light of Christ to come, about Whom he spoke to the world, and sought to prepare the people to accept through a repentance in preparation for His coming.  John the Baptist's life teaches us about martyrdom and about greatness, for no other figure so strongly taught us about the life of Christ to come, and no other embodied, at the same time, the humility before Christ that uncovers the truth for all of us. For it is John who said of Jesus, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30).  This is our own statement for the work of the Cross and the Holy Spirit in our own lives.  St. Paul put it this way:  "I die daily" (1 Corinthians 15:31).  Before the Cross came, John showed us his love of God, and pointed the way to Christ, just as he would do (according to the Orthodox tradition) for the souls awaiting Christ the Savior in Hades.  He is, therefore, in all ways true to his title, the Forerunner.  Let us honor holiness, wherever it is found, wherever Christ is revered, and the Cross is known and lived.

The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few

 
 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.  But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.  Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest."  And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.  Now the names of the twelve apostles are these:  first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

Yesterday we read that two blind men followed Jesus, crying out and saying, "Son of David, have mercy on us!"  And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him.  And Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?  They said to Him, "Yes, Lord."  Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith let it be to you."  And their eyes were opened.  And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, "See that no one knows it."  But when they had departed, they spread the news about Him in all that country.  As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed.  And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke.  And the multitudes marveled, saying, "It was never seen like this in Israel!"  But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons."
 
  Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.  But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.  Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest."   This phrase, like sheep having no shepherd, is similar to the language in Mark 6:34, which we read as a description of the crowd of 5,000 which Jesus will feed in the wilderness (see Mark 6:30-44).  Here the words weary and scattered describe the crowd, meaning that they were like those cast aside from the world, exhausted in their struggles.  In a sense, it's a description of those who are figuratively "homeless" -- like sheep having no shepherd, who need His good guidance and love, His compassion.  In yesterday's commentary, we remarked upon Christ's gathering of the outcast, the poor in spirit, the outliers in some sense.  Here the description of these people exemplifies those to whom He has come to extend His care, His church.  His comment,  "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.  Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest" teaches us that this is indeed how He views these multitudes.
 
 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.  Now the names of the twelve apostles are these:  first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.   My study Bible comments that disciples and apostles are often used interchangeably for the twelve.  Jesus gave them power to perform miracles, while He performed them by His own power.  It notes that he names of the Twelve are not the same in all lists, because many people had more than one name.  Here the names are given in pairs, which suggests who might have traveled together on their "first missionary journey," as St. Mark tells us that they were sent out two by two (Mark 6:7).  
 
It's very interesting to note how Jesus fulfills the needs He encounters in the people, as He goes out preaching, teaching and healing.  At this point in His ministry, He's encountering multitudes who are like sheep without a shepherd, weary and scattered.  As commented above, this description gives us a sense of people who are beleaguered by life, in some sense cast off by the society that does not feed them what they need.   They need a true leader, someone to guide them, and clearly that Someone is Jesus, who is our true and good Shepherd (see John 10:1-30).  This description of the multitudes sounds like something that many "multitudes" could relate to today in our world.  Wherever we are, it seems that there are a lot of people feeling like they are in need of a shepherd, who may feel cast off and even without a deep sense of community.  Christ responds in a characteristic way, which is not sad nor diminished in optimism, but rather quite the opposite.  He sees these seemingly lost multitudes as a harvest which is plentiful for His future Church, but that there is simply a need of more laborers to gather them.   These are the people He has come to gather to Himself, to guide as Shepherd.  They are the lost sheep who need Him.  And now is the time not simply to minister to them, but to expand His ministry by extending His power to His disciples who will now become apostles.  After calling the Twelve, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. This is what Christ has come to do, and it is an opportunity for the glory of God and the power of Christ to manifest itself and grow within human beings.  These are the ones He has come for, and this is the way that His Church will be built.  Christ at once gives us many things characteristic of Himself and His work:  if something is sad, or weak, or broken, or in need of healing or care in our sight, it is an opportunity for His work, His power, His energy.  If something is cast off, He can gather it to Himself, and the ones who are scattered He can gather into His community.  And He will do this by extending His power through human beings, the faithful disciples.  This is also, if we look closely, the characteristics of the Cross, for in what appears to us sad or broken or needful, and invites despair, there is God who can work even through all things.  Just as St. Paul was told that God's strength was made perfect in his weakness (1 Corinthians 12:9), so grace works through the things that look "less than" to us, and Christ's greatest power continues to work through the Cross, even defeating death.  Let us look to that grace for all the surprising, uplifting, and beautiful things it can bring into our lives as well.  For we may all be laborers in whatever ways we are called.

You give them something to eat

 
 Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.  And He said to them, "Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while."  For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.  So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.  
 
But the multitudes saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities.  They arrived before them and came together to Him.  And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.  So He began to teach them many things.  
 
When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, "This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late.  Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat."  But He answered and said to them, "You give them something  to eat."  And they said to Him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?"  But He said to them, "How many loaves do you have?  Go and see."  And when they found out they said, "Five, and two fish."  Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.  So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties.  And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all.  So they ate and were filled.  And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish.  Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.
 
Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go  before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.  And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.

Yesterday we read that King Herod heard of Jesus, for His name had become well known.  And he said, "John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him."  Others said, "It is Elijah."  And others said, "It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets."  But when Herod heard, he said, "This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!"  For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her.  Because John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."  Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not; for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him.  And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.  Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee.  And when Herodias' daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, "Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you."  He also swore to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom."  So she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?"  And she said, "The head of John the Baptist!"  Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."  And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.  Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought.  And he went and beheaded him in prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.  When his disciples heard of it, they came and took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.
 
  Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.  And He said to them, "Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while."  For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.  So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.  Continuing on from yesterday's reading, our first verse today resumes "present time" in the narrative, whereas the story of the beheading of St. John the Baptist was given as a kind of "flashback" so that we understand Herod Antipas' fear of Jesus, that He is John returned from the dead.  My study Bible comments on this passage that Christ gives rest to His disciples to show those engaged in preaching and teaching that they must not labor continuously, but must also take rest.  So important is His time spent with them, that they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves.  
 
 But the multitudes saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities.  They arrived before them and came together to Him.  And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.  So He began to teach them many things.   Although Jesus quite deliberately set out with the disciples for a deserted place so that they could rest together, the multitudes will not leave them alone, and follow Him even on foot.  Here, Jesus' compassion plays a part, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.  And what do lost sheep without a shepherd need?  Learning and teaching; so He began to teach them many things. This is discipleship.
 
 When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, "This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late.  Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat."  But He answered and said to them, "You give them something  to eat."  And they said to Him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?"  But He said to them, "How many loaves do you have?  Go and see."  And when they found out they said, "Five, and two fish."  Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass.  So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties.  And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all.  So they ate and were filled.  And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish.  Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.  This miracle is reported by all four evangelists; it shows Jesus feeding a great multitude of His people as He fed the Israelites in the desert (Exodus 16).  My study Bible reports that the Church Fathers see in this feeding miracle an image of the Eucharist.  This sense is made quite clear in St. John's Gospel (see John 6).  Here, Jesus shows that we should never eat without first giving thanks to God.  According to my study Bible, the terminology (He blessed and broke the loaves) points to the Last Supper (Matthew 26:26), leading to a eucharistic interpretation of this miracle.  Just as the disciples distribute the bread to the people, my study Bible notes, so also Christ feeds the Eucharist to His flock through the hands of His bishops and presbyters.  There is a spiritual interpretation to this miracle which my study Bible cites. In that interpretation, the five loaves indicate the five books of the law (Genesis through Deuteronomy), which are broken open in Christ and so therefore feed the universe, all of creation.  The two fish represent the Gospel Book and the Epistle Book, the teaching of the fishermen.  The gathering of the leftovers by the apostles (twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish) shows that the teachings which the faithful cannot grasp are nonetheless held in the consciousness of the Church.  
 
 Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go  before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.  And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray.  This feeding miracle, and its prefiguring of the Eucharist, forms another type of turning point in Christ's ministry.  Note that He departed to the mountain to pray by Himself, after sending the disciples on their way once more across the sea.
 
 Today's reading asks us to open up to questions about consumption.  That is, to think about what we feed ourselves.  What really nourishes us?  With what do we want to be nourished?  We live in an overwhelmingly consumerist-oriented society, at least in a modern, developed world.  We consume entertainments, food, and other things.  But the question of what we seek to consume, and what we seek in order to nurture and feed ourselves for good spiritual health becomes a kind of discernment we might not always think about as clearly as we should.  Clearly the people who follow Christ in the beginning of today's reading perceive in themselves some great need for what they seek from Him.  It's likely that they pursue Him because of the miraculous healings that He is by now so famous for.  But what Jesus will offer to nurture people is what they truly need for their best welfare.  Moreover this welfare involves body, soul, heart, mind, and spirit.  So, although perhaps the people chase after Jesus from all points in order to pursue Him for His famous healings (including the casting out of unclean spirits), Jesus' way of giving them what they need -- of truly nurturing them -- is to teach them.  For the problem He perceives is that they are like sheep not having a shepherd.  Christ's compassion is to provide the people who seek Him with what they truly need.  But then later, another, different need arises.  They have spent the day listening to Him, and they are in a deserted place.  They will need something to eat, so the disciples approach Jesus to send the people away so they find food.  But He has another plan; He wants the disciples to give the people something to eat.  The disciples ask about purchasing two hundred denarii worth of bread (a denarius was about one day's wage for a laborer), which still would not be enough for this large crowd.  Perhaps this is all the ministry could afford.  But Jesus tells the disciples, "You give them something to eat."  It would seem that this is another way of giving people what they need:  the disciples will learn what is possible for them, while Christ will expand the nature of His ministry to include preparation for the Eucharist to come.  A holy meal, indeed, based on faith and the miraculous power of Christ to multiply the little we have to start with -- a kind of display in real time of the nature of the Kingdom as illustrated in the parable of the mustard seed, an active manifestation of the principle named in that same reading, "For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him."  With what little they have, Christ's holy power multiplies what's there to feed the crowds who've stayed with Him as He taught them late into the day.  The Shepherd gives the sheep what they need, and in so doing, the beginnings of the chief sacrament of Christ's Church are begun.  In that sacrament, it is Christ Himself who becomes our food.  Later, after Christ has sent the disciples back across the sea, He departed to the mountain alone to pray.  For even our Lord has need of food which we do not know.  Let us follow His example!
