But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you

 
 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.  Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?  So why do you worry about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow:  they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'  For after all these things the Gentiles seek.  For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

We are currently reading through the Sermon on the Mount.  On Saturday, we read that Jesus taught His disciples, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  The lamp of the body is the eye.  If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.  But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.  If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness.  No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon."

 "So why do you worry about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow:  they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'  For after all these things the Gentiles seek.  For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things."  Because the Gentiles served pagan idols, they remained dependent upon earthly things, my study Bible says.  Those who follow God can be freed from this dependence.  
 
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."  The kingdom of God is the central theme of Christ's teaching, and God's righteousness is the subject of the Sermon on the Mount, my study Bible notes.  It says that Jesus calls us to be free from anxiety about earthly things, and directs us to look to heaven -- secure in the faith that God will provide needed earthly blessings.  
 
So, what is God's righteousness?   The entire Sermon on the Mount is a way to express this, what life is like in living for the Kingdom.  We started with the Beatitudes, which taught us how to live and to view a blessed life.  From there we learned that believers are like salt and light, and carry these needful qualities with them in spiritual terms that help their societies and communities.  Deepening our understanding of the Law and its aims, Jesus teaches us about the reality of our interior lives, what it means to be part of this communion, and to take action to avoid sin at deeper levels within our own hearts.  In other words, true righteousness, and justice, even spiritual perfection.  Giving examples of this life, He teaches us how we should pray, and what to pray.  Yesterday, He taught us about the impossibility of serving two masters; we'll either be a slave to materialism or freed in true righteousness, embracing the life of the Kingdom (see above).  Moreover, in today's reading, Jesus elaborates on that freedom, asking us to become freed enough from attachment to our material desires so as to avoid excess anxiety, to stop making that the central focus of life and put God there instead -- "for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things."  In other words, we don't divide life into two realms, but we do put one first, the one governed by God, under whom are all things, for God creates and upholds all of reality.  When we lose the righteousness -- the kingdom of God and His righteousness -- then we lose the reason for being, the ways of relationship to the world and even to our material possessions, how to use them, what they are for, and how they are provided for us.  In our lives we may work hard, we may find very creative ways to live material lives, but ultimately our well-being depends upon placing our faith in something that colors everything and transcends it.  In recognizing dependence upon God, we not only find this righteousness and this Kingdom for ourselves, we also find a healthy gratitude, an understanding of life that places in our laps the means by which we find values and priorities for all that we do.  Gratitude is so often the alternative, and therapy, for the times one feels depression or meaninglessness, so let us shape our lives by this understanding of dependence upon God.  Even the sad parts of life, the things we experience as loss, pain, or suffering, gain meaning through God's righteousness, and relationship to Creator, including insights on how we go forward through difficulties.  So let us depend upon Christ and free ourselves from the anxieties that make us unbalanced and unreceptive to the righteousness and communion we can find.  Today's passage contains some of the most beautiful imagery found in all of Scripture.  It's not for nothing that Jesus reminds us of the stunning beauty of nature ("even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these"), of the things created by God, the dependency even of the birds of the air for God's care ("Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?"), and most especially how futile our worry and anxiety are ("Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?").  In this context, faith becomes the way of life that is not simply preferable, but needful, and for all of us as human beings.  In the modern world, we feel that we are constantly bombarded with things to worry about; we are constantly fed information guaranteed to stoke anxiety.  Jesus acknowledges that we have needs, and we also have troubles, but He puts them into context for us.  Perhaps it was always like this, but nonetheless even in our present age it remains true, that "tomorrow will worry about its own things -- and sufficient for the day is its own trouble."  Let us take Jesus at His word, for unlike some who preach all kinds of systems or philosophies or even faiths, He doesn't scare us with fear, but quite the opposite.  He teaches us that a focus on worry and anxiety avail us nothing; only faith changes everything and is the place we should take our stand and root ourselves in life.  Let us remember the beauty and wisdom He teaches to us. We are called to a particular Kingdom, and a particular righteousness.  The whole world may urgently chase the material life ("For after all these things the Gentiles seek"), but we are called to a different way.  In a world increasingly obsessed with security, let us consider how we may seek first the kingdom of God and God's righteousness.

Yesterday we read that, as Jesus was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."  So He said to them, "When you pray, say: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.  And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.  
And He said to them, "Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him'; and he will answer from within and say, 'Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you'?  I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.  So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.  If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?  Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

"For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things."  Because the Gentiles (the nations of the world) served pagan idols, my study Bible says, they were consumed by dependence upon earthly things.  Those who follow God, it notes, can be freed from this dependence. 
 
 "But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you."  My study Bible comments that the kingdom of God is the central theme of Jesus' teaching.  As we are called to be freed from anxiety regarding earthly things, Jesus teaches us to look to heaven, secure in the faith that God will provide needed earthly blessings. 
 
 Why are we completely dependent upon God?  What is Jesus' purpose in teaching us to be so?  In the first place, opening up to the reality and presence of this Kingdom is a way of entering into an identity.  In the ancient world, identity was formed not by theories of racial lineage or heritage in that sense, but by the sense of the "code" one belonged to.  The ethos, if you will, of Athens made one an Athenian.  The law of Rome made one a Roman, hence St. Paul, a Jew and a Roman citizen was not crucified, and he was entitled to demand a hearing before Caesar.  Law of Moses made one a Jew, and the Old Testament Scriptures are filled with foreigners who became a part of the people of Israel (the story, for example, of Ruth and Naomi comes to mind).  In St. Matthew's Gospel, these teachings we find in today's reading come just prior to the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus gives us the Nomos, or Law, so to speak of the kingdom of God.  In the context of St. Luke's Gospel, Jesus is addressing His disciples, and will heavily emphasize courage, faith, and confidence in the missions they are about to undertake, preparing them for their future in establishing the Church.  Jesus' gospel is precisely that, a "nomos" or body of law that governs the kingdom of God.  We, as faithful, with the disciples, enter into and bear that Kingdom into the world, just as they are sent out as apostles to bear that Kingdom -- the gospel message -- into the world.  Jesus is telling us to bravely and courageously do so, relying on God in faith, and placing our values, our code we live by, into the proper order.  We seek the kingdom of God first, and then to that all things are added.

But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you

 
 Then one from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."  But He said to him, "Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?"  And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses."  
 
Then He spoke a parable to them, saying:  "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.  And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?'  So he said, 'I will do this:  I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."'  But God said to him, 'Fool!  This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?'  So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Yesterday we read that as Jesus was speaking to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.  In the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His disciples first of all, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.  For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.  Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.  And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.  But I will show you whom you should fear:  Fear Him who, after He has  killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!  Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins?  And not one of them is forgotten before God.  But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.   Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God.  But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.  And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.  Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say.  For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say." 

 Then one from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."  But He said to him, "Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?"  And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses."  My study Bible comments that it was a custom for respected rabbis to arbitrate personal disputes.  But a dispute over an inheritance can be detrimental to salvation.  This greed is pure idolatry, my study Bible comments (Colossians 3:5) and unfitting for those who know God.  Notice how incompatible this question is with what Christ has just finished saying, in yesterday's reading, above. 
 
 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying:  "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.  And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?'  So he said, 'I will do this:  I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."'  But God said to him, 'Fool!  This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?'  So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."  My study Bible says that the question, "Whose will those things be which you hae provided?" is the key to understanding the saving up of material goods.  St. John Chrysostom writes that the only barns we need we already have:  "the stomachs of the poor."  St. Basil the Great taught that the bread in our cupboard belongs to the hungry man; the coat hanging unused belongs to the one who needs it; the shoes rotting in our closet belong to the one who has no shoes; and the money we hoard belongs to the poor.  St. Ambrose teaches, "The things which we cannot take with us are not ours.  Only virtue will be our companion when we die."  My study Bible says that even when Joseph stored up grain in Egypt (Genesis 41) it was for the benefit of the whole nation.  These teachings apply to parishes as well as to each person.

What does it mean to seek the kingdom of God?  Christ has given us prescriptions, so to speak, in all of His teachings, about how to do that.  We are to pray, we are to seek God's righteousness.  We are to love God with all our hearts and minds and soul and strength -- and to love neighbor as oneself, extended that love through practice.  To dispute over an inheritance does not seem to indicate that one is seeking a righteous judgment but rather contesting something legitimately given out of greed and covetousness.  Let us think for a moment about what such disputes entail, the expense and effort and time, not to mention the family dynamics of such a circumstance.  This indicates that one has not sought God's will in such a dispute but rather values material wealth first over the kingdom of God.  We make such choices all the time; we are presented with such choices all the time -- and in today's passage, Jesus is clearly coming down firmly on the answer for us all.  We're to seek first the kingdom of God, in all things, and at all times.  This may seem difficult, if not impossible to do in a world obsessed with material goods and consumption.  It's exacerbated through modern conditions of comparison to others and being offered all kinds of goods through images, advertising, social media.  Social media often offers to us what we supposedly "should" be seeking in life, because everyone else does it, because all our friends do, or even family members.  But this is not where the Christian heart must be focusing.  These are all great distractions to seek something else and take our mind and our focus off of God, and Christ's teaching for us and for our lives.  There really is no compromise on this; Jesus teaches that we cannot serve both God and mammon.  We have to make a choice.  Note that Jesus does not say that we must live without blessings of a material kind -- what He does say is that we need to seek the kingdom of God.  He tells us that "your Father knows that you need these things.  But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you."    Seeking the kingdom of God, therefore, applies to all times and circumstances.  We seek God's will through prayerful life, putting all things -- our troubles, concerns, worries, needs, and choices -- before God and seeking the discernment to find God's way.  Sometimes I have found that an important practice in life is seeking to give control up to God, to accept what comes with gratitude.  Regardless of circumstances, I find that letting go to God helps me with clarity and also with charity; sometimes those in need are brought to me with what God thinks I can offer, even if that's just a kind word or smile.  So often, we forget what blessings we really have to share; a focus on the purely material blinds us to the other things people need and desire for their hearts as well.  Let us seek that Kingdom and God's blessings, and we will find that we have so much more than we know.

I love the imagery in this text.  Jesus shows us the ravens, who are highly intelligent birds, but do not sow nor reap, and have neither storehouse nor barn.  But Jesus tells us that God feeds them.  The next example Jesus uses is our own height.  Through worry and anxiety, can we grow taller?  A cubit was approximately a foot and a half -- and no, we haven't really figured out how to achieve that (which Jesus calls "the least").  So anxiety for the rest will achieve us nothing.  Then Jesus chooses the example of the lilies of the field.  The permanent photograph at the top of my blog is meant to represent these, taken of a type of lily species which spreads itself all over certain areas.  They don't toil or spin -- allusions to the making of cloth.  But still, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these beautiful, stunningly colored lilies.  Jesus compares the value of human beings to this "grass" of the field -- which lasts for so short a time, and asks us to consider how much more God will clothe us.  I have written recently in a commentary on another passage (see Monday's reading) on Jesus' own apparent conduct of His ministry, and His singular focus on the particular things that were essential to Him.  In that reading, Jesus asked the disciples who the crowds thought He was.  Of course, there were all kinds of answers, and we note that in the Gospels, the crowds are almost always wrong.  But Jesus does not spend His time worrying about what the crowds think; He is, instead, seeking out those of true faith, who are capable of understanding and becoming disciples.  Just consider what was at stake, and yet, He does not spend His time on the details of what everybody is going to think.  In today's reading, Jesus gives explicit advice to His disciples to also share His own focus on the things that God calls us to, and to leave the rest in the hands of God and to expand their faith.  By pointing out the birds and the beauty of the natural world, He does not mean that we are to do absolutely nothing in our lives, as my study bible points out.  But He is telling us about priorities and our focus in life.  He is telling us about the great importance of faith as antidote to anxiety.  He is especially telling us to focus our efforts on what will be truly rewarding for us.  If we expend all our anxiety and worry (and time and energy) on things that really aren't of much consequence, then what have we done with the potentials that God gives us as human beings -- potentials especially valuable and powerful in comparison with the birds and the wildflowers?  If we are really going to be His disciples, and follow His tremendous example, we should focus on how we live our lives as we are called by Christ, and on doing the will of the Father in this world (see yesterday's reading, above, and the Lord's Prayer).  While Christ had a tremendous mission upon which a universe relies, we each have our own crosses to bear -- and our focus needs to be on what is essential in our lives.  In a world that seems to be developing increasingly precarious problems for us to worry about, it seems that growing problems of anxiety are in deep need of correction beyond prescription drugs and other therapies -- and this is where Christ's faith and focus comes in.  We need to get our priorities in line, and put things in proper focus.  So much emphasis on social media contributes to the skewing of priorities and directly impacts the anxieties which Jesus mentions.  All the focus on appearance and wealth are evident on social media.  Used for political leveraging and encouraging people to keep up with the latest slogans and concerns also takes us outside of a faith focus, and one aligned with those crowds who always simply follow the crowd!   It is perhaps more necessary than ever to cultivate our own discipline in focusing on what is truly important and essential in life, and also taking time out for prayer and alignment with Our Father in heaven and how we seek to bear God's kingdom into the world.  Too much focus on every detail we cannot control isn't healthy, and is not what Jesus prescribed.  Nor is it what He did in His ministry.  When asked a question that alluded to nationalist politics, He taught, "Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's" (Luke 20:25).  Let us remember which takes top priority, and follow Christ in His discipline that He taught us, for our health, wholeness, and sanity.  Cultivating our faith in today's world is perhaps a higher priority and greater necessity than ever.

Sufficient for the day is its own trouble


"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.  Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?  So why do you worry about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'  For after all these things the Gentiles seek.  For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Currently, we are reading through the Sermon on the Mount, chapters 5-7 in Matthew's Gospel.  In the previous reading, Jesus taught:  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.  The lamp of the body is the eye.  If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.  But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.  If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!  No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon."

 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.  Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?"  My study bible tells us:  "Jesus is warning against anxiety, not against thoughtful planning.  Our physical well-being is directly dependent on God, and only indirectly on food, drink and clothing.  Anxiety over earthly things demonstrates a lack of faith in God's care."

"So why do you worry about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'  For after all these things the Gentiles seek."  My study bible notes here:  "Because the Gentiles served pagan idols, they remained consumed by dependence on earthly things.  Those who follow God can be freed from this dependence."

"For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."  A note on verse 33 (the first verse here) says:  "The kingdom of God is the central theme of Jesus' teaching, and His righteousness is the subject of the Sermon on the Mount.  Calling us to be free from anxiety about earthly things, Jesus directs us to look to heaven, secure in the faith that God will provide needed earthly blessings."

Clearly, Jesus asks us to put all things in the hands of God.  Not only are we to trust all our worries and anxieties (What shall we eat?  What shall we drink?  What shall we wear?) to God, we are to be actively engaged in seeking His kingdom first, and His righteousness, and it is God who will add these things to us.  We are not to worry about tomorrow in the sense that the ordinary anxieties that each day brings are simply sufficient trouble!  We are not called toward anxieties!  I think maybe this is a much more crucial and central teaching than we expect.  Those worries and anxieties, it seems to me, also attend to our spiritual stature.  Are we to spend all our time worrying and anxious that God doesn't love us?  That we haven't done enough?  Can we trust to God's mercy and love?  Can we really trust the relationship that we have to God, to Christ?  I think that these things are crucial in exploring the attitude that God wants us to have in all ways, and they convey just exactly what sort of orientation we are to have in our lives when we feel that we truly are in a relationship -- an intimate relationship -- to God.  It is, after all, this God who so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.  Jesus' incarnation invites us into relationship and love, steadfast mercy, as the prophets of old might have said.  Jesus lived and lives eternally in the fullness of His glory and presence as one of us.  He knows what we go through.  He understands a world filled not just with troubles, with imperfections, with afflictions, but also one in which we dwell as those who are in some sense set apart by our love and trust in God, in Christ, so that we are to have a completely different understanding of anxieties than those who do not have this confidence.  Today, let us think about what He teaches.  Paradoxically, Jesus tells us about our own powerlessness and weakness (Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?), but at the same time, He gives us the confidence of our faith, reminding us as He will later teach in Matthew's Gospel:  "With God, all things are possible" (19:26).  Let us try to remember that sufficient for the day is its own trouble!

Solomon in all his glory

As we have been doing for more than a week, today we continue with the Sermon on the Mount. Previous readings for this Sermon are: The Beatitudes, Salt and Light, Till heaven and earth pass away, You shall not murder, If your right eye causes you to sin, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, Your father who is in the secret place, Our Father in heaven, and No one can serve two masters.

Today, Jesus continues his theme from yesterday's reading (see No one can serve two masters) in which he taught that one cannot serve God and mammon. Jesus said, "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other." He taught also that we are not to store up for ourselves "treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven." Today, he continues with this message about detachment, and excessive worry and focus on material things - to the detriment of that which should come first in our focus.

"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?" My study bible notes here: "Severe anxiety, not thoughtful planning and care, is what is warned against here. Physical growth and length of life is dependent upon the providence of God more than upon food, drink and clothing. Persistent anxiety over the things of this world demonstrates internal insecurity and a weak or superficial faith." I think this emphasis by my study bible on excessive anxiety is very important. This is a problem for myself on occasion as well, and my solution is always to turn toward God in prayer. Often my direction in prayer is soothing and calming - and then it's my choice if I am going to pay attention and do what is smart! Jesus' words, "Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?" really make tremendous sense in this context, a good question to ask ourselves today amidst anxiety. I find that I am not alone in this problem - anxiety and depression are overwhelmingly the highest rank among social problems that plague the public state of overall emotional health. In the highest ranking among prescription pharmaceuticals in many countries are those for anxiety and depression. What is it about our lifestyles that promotes this? Certainly, Jesus' teachings are those which help us to address this problem. A part of repentance (Gk. metanoia, literally "change of mind") is to address this within ourselves as a problem. I think it is linked to the teachings of yesterday's reading, No one can serve two masters. I know that, for myself, often the solution is simply to give things up that I thought were important, and to see that some of the priorities I had were simply wrong - to "change my mind." Often, we may be fighting social pressures when we do this, and it takes strength to do so.

"So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we wear?'" For myself, I can say that I think these are simply some of the most beautiful words in the gospels. Is not nature, indeed, divinely beautiful? These words give us a sense that our love of beauty is God-given and God-inspired, Creation is good. It is not that we are taught not to wish for the goodness in life, whatever that is. But we are to have faith.

"For after all these things the Gentiles seek. A note in my study bible reads: "The pagan worship of the Gentiles did not deliver them from their earthly cares, because it was focused upon nonexistent gods, that is, idols." For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." And here we have the right perspective, the solution. My study bible notes, "The kingdom of God is the central theme of the teaching of Jesus, and His righteousness is the subject of the Sermon on the Mount. Calling us to be set free from anxiety about earthly things, Jesus directs us to look to heaven, to this greater 'country' which will be received at the Day of the Lord, secure in the faith that God will provide needed earthly blessings." What I find absolutely essential in these teachings is the choice to put the kingdom God and his righteousness first, and all things are set into their proper relationship thereafter. That is, such relationship includes proper priorities as well. What do we need? What is it we have that creates excessive anxiety, that we are better off without? Which concerns can we transcend and set aside in this right-relatedness first to the kingdom and to its righteousness, its justice and love? We must understand, at some point, that idolatry also takes the form of excessive prioritizing of material gain and acquisition. How many relationships are ruined through greed and selfishness? Is righteousness not constantly thwarted by those who will do anything for gain out of an excessive sense of need or greed?

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." Here is truly wisdom. "Sufficient for the day..." is a phrase I often find repeating to myself. We take up worries and anxieties, we fret over things we think we need, or that we cannot control, or that we just feel we need to happen for us. As I live in an affluent country, I find we are often being pushed to buy things - through all kinds of social pressures of various types - that we don't necessarily need. Rather there is the drive to acquire what we see that others have, and there is shame attached to not having those things. Therefore, we have a state in which we find shame attached to being poor, to poverty. How can this be righteous? We need to re-think priorities when we penalize those who may need help, when we lose a sense of right-relatedness to others who have less. This is one of the social problems that I feel this teaching would address.

Moreover, we can feel terrible about ourselves because we don't make the right appearance to others - to those who would judge us because there are some things we don't have, including any form of social status. Adoption of these values causes yet more anxiety over how to get what we may not truly need. This is also a problem, and, I feel, a symptom of unrighteousness - of wrong-relatedness, if you will. Does Christ teach us to judge by appearance? We will read more about that tomorrow, and hopefully understand how good judgment fits into this concept of our priorities. We put relationship to Creator first - to this kingdom and its righteousness, and then all things are set into proper relationship afterward. The treasures that moth and rust cannot destroy, and thieves cannot break in and steal, remain the greatest treasures. The Blessings of the Beatitudes remain our most cherished treasure, and everything else must take second rank to that, if we are to be Christ's disciples. I feel this is a strong solution to many public problems of mental health, along with many therapeutic professionals. Regardless of spiritual orientation, the values of love, mercy, humility, justice all have the greatest value in teaching us what is right, and what it is to be in the state of righteousness, of right-relatedness, of true justice among ourselves. And to set aside that which we do not need, the things we are better off without - and without the excess concern they bring, and the harmful ways we may behave in their service. It gives us freedom. It is all related; one cannot serve God and mammon. Let us put our priorities straight. It would do so much to repair what ails us, both personally and socially, and to address the cause of broken relationships on every level.
