But this is your hour, and the power of darkness

 
 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?  When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me.  But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."
 
Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest's house.  But Peter followed at a distance.  Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.  And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, "This man was also with Him."  But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."  And after a little while another saw him and said, "You also are of them."  But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"  Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."  But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying!"  Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."  So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

On Saturday, we read that coming out from the temple in Jerusalem, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.  When He came to the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation."  And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."  Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.  And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly.  Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.  When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow.  Then He said to them, "Why do you sleep?  Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation." And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before  them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.  But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"  When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"  And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.  But Jesus answered and said, "Permit even this."  And He touched his ear and healed him.
 
  Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?  When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me.  But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."   For our understanding of darkness in this context, my study Bible refers us to John 3:19-21; 13:30.  In these contexts, we observe that the power of darkness is that which resists the light, the true light that has come into the world, Jesus Christ, who is Light of Light (Nicene Creed).
 
 Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest's house.  But Peter followed at a distance.  Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.  And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, "This man was also with Him."  But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."   My study Bible comments on the fact that it is a girl who is the first to test Peter.  In patristic understanding, this is an icon of the temptation of Adam by Eve in Genesis 3:6.  Our fallen state, it notes, is overcome in Christ when women are the first to hear, believe, and proclaim the Resurrection (see Luke 24:1-10).  
 
 And after a little while another saw him and said, "You also are of them."  But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"  Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."  But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying!"  Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."  So Peter went out and wept bitterly.  My study Bible notes that Peter is so overcome with fear that neither Christ's prediction (Luke 22:34) nor the crowing of the rooster calls him to repentance.  Only the gaze of the Lord causes Peter to weep bitterly.  St. Ambrose of Milan is quoted, who says that, nonetheless, "through tears, what cannot be defended can be purged, for tears wash away the offense which is shameful to confess out loud." 
 
What do we do when we have done something that seems unforgivable -- and most of all, unforgivable to ourselves?   Just prior to Christ's seizure by the authorities, He said to Peter, "Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail . . .."  But Peter responded to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death."  See Luke 22:31-34.  But here, even before a servant girl, the first to spot Peter as a follower of Christ, he wavers and caves to his fears, denying that he was a disciple.  A man then affirms that he was one of them, and Peter denies it again.  Finally, another affirms that it must be so, due to Peter's Galilean accent he recognizes, Jesus' disciples having followed Him from Galilee.  It's only the gaze of Christ that causes Peter to come to himself, and to realize what he has done.  He hasn't simply denied Christ, he has also betrayed himself in so doing.  We can only imagine what it is to confidently predict what steadfast people we are, how we will uphold our values or principles, we will always be loyal and never waver -- and then, just like that, we are tested and we fail even in our own eyes.  No wonder Peter went out and wept bitterly.  Not only has Peter failed himself and, more importantly, His Lord, Peter's overconfidence came in the face of Christ's prophecy to him.  When we look at this story this way, we see that Christ, of course, was not trying to bring Peter down or even to criticize him, but to forewarn him of the test and temptation to come, to solemnly warn him of his own weaknesses and his need to be conscious of them.  How many of us could confess to making similar mistakes in our lives, only to have to come to terms with how we have come up short?  Certainly this author can say so.  But for St. Peter, for myself, and one may dare say for all, Christ is the answer to our bitter failures and shortcomings.  For Jesus, as He indeed indicated, still wants St. Peter for his mission.  Even if we fail in our own eyes, and in the eyes of the world, our disappointment is only really tempered through Christ, who has a place for us, a plan, a way to go forward.  That means is through repentance, through turning back to Christ through all things, and accepting the reality He offers us.  That is, just as in this specific case we're given in the Gospels with St. Peter, we need to accept His judgment instead of our own -- even on ourselves as well.  Jesus also predicts to Peter, ". . . when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."  There is a very important lesson here about our faith, about confidence in ourselves, about our own judgment and estimation of our own potential weaknesses.  But most of all, it also tells us about temptation, for the devil who wanted to sift Peter as wheat apparently helped bring along the means of the failure of his faith, a way to trip him up in his weakness.  But with Christ, such stumbling blocks become opportunities for growth and for the strengthening of our faith, in that we become more aware of who we are, grow in helpful knowledge of our weaknesses, and may always turn and return to Him in repentance so that He shows us the way for us to the future and a better destiny and life.  St. Peter, of course, went on to have remarkable faith, going to his martyrdom for Christ, finally true to his word.  But before that he became a pillar of the Church, part of the foundation as the "rock" that Jesus named him, giving to us in turn a faith against which the gates of hades could not prevail (Matthew 16:18).  Yesterday, across the world and across many denominations, was the Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.  Let us be truly grateful for the foundation they gave us, and follow in their footsteps as faithful to Christ.  For we all may be tested by the power of darkness, but with Christ it shall never prevail.

Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?

 
 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.  Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father.  For which of those works do you stone Me?"  The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."  Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in our law, 'I said, "You are gods"'?  If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?  If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him."  Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.  And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed.  Then many came to Him and said, "John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true."  And many believed in Him there.

In our recent readings (from the beginning of chapter 7), Jesus has been attending the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem.  It is the final year of His earthly life.  There He has disputed with the religious authorities, and restored the sight of a man who was blind since birth.  Yesterday we read that there was a division again among the leaders because of these sayings.  And many of them said, "He has a demon and is mad.  Why do you listen to Him?"  Others said, "These are not the words of one who has a demon.  Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"  Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter.  And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon's porch.  Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, "How long do You keep us in doubt?  If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."  Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe.  The works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me.  But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you.  My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.  And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.  My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.  I and My Father are one."
 
  Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.  Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father.  For which of those works do you stone Me?"  The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."   At the end of yesterday's reading (see above), Jesus responded to the question of the religious leaders, "How long do You keep us in doubt?  If You are the Christ, tell us plainly."  He answered clearly when He said, "I and My Father are one."  For this they take up stones again to stone Him.  (We recall that the term the Jews is most often used in John's Gospel to designate the religious leaders, and not the people.)   In so doing, Jesus reveals Himself to be fully God.  To be one with the Father means one in nature or essence.   Christ's opponents clearly recognize this claim of divinity, my study Bible says, and therefore accuse Him of blasphemy.  

Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in our law, 'I said, "You are gods"'?  If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?  If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him."   My study Bible comments on Christ's quotation from Scripture, "You are gods" (Psalm 82:6):  People who receive God's grace in faith will partake of God's divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) and can rightly be called gods.  St. John Chrysostom paraphrases Christ as effectively saying, "If those who have received this honor by grace are not guilty for calling themselves gods, how can He who has this by nature deserve to be rebuked?"  Again, Christ cites His works as witness to His divinity and His union with the Father.  

Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.  And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed.  Then many came to Him and said, "John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true."  And many believed in Him there.  As Christ is going to His Passion voluntarily and according to His own will (verses 17-18), those who accuse Him cannot arrest Him until He is ready (John 7:30; 8:20; see Luke 4:28-30).  
 
In today's reading, when Jesus goes beyond the Jordan (that is, east of the Jordan River, the place where John was baptizing at first), the people say, "John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true."  Note how, in the people's response to Jesus beyond the Jordan, it is first of all His works that speak as witness for them.  That is, the things that He does prove that John's word about Jesus was true.  Moreover, we are once again given John the Baptist as effective witness, for the people now see for themselves that all the things John spoke about Jesus were true.  So, in subtle ways, even though the religious leaders don't believe Christ, and don't accept His witness (nor the people or things He names as witnesses to His divinity), the people believe.  They accept Him, and affirm that the things John the Baptist said about Him were true.  This seems to be clearly the perspective of the Gospel, at least among those who have faithfully pursued the holy ones dedicated to God, like the prophet John the Baptist.  Perhaps there is a lesson here about witnessing and truth, in that these things teach us that the acceptance of truth also depends not simply upon witnesses, but also upon the disposition of the heart of the beholder in the first place.  If a person is dead set against accepting someone or something, then no amount of witnesses will be entirely persuasive.  This is especially true if there is a particular reason of self-interest or group interest for people to reject a particular truth.  Such things can form a compelling reason to deny or reject truth.  In the case of the religious leaders and Jesus, He criticizes them freely.  They stand to lose their positions of authority, and He also alludes to their corruption.  They have a tight control on positions in the temple and even for some faction of the ruling Council, on the wealth and property around Jerusalem.  So important is this aspect of faith that John the Evangelist begins this Gospel with verses that focus on the rejection of light for darkness (John 1:1-5).  At any rate, Christ's emphasis on repentance comes in here as an important aspect of His preaching, because in the sense of the Greek of the Gospels, the word translated as "repentance" means literally "change of mind."  In this context of witnessing and belief (or, more accurately, trust), the possibility of changing one's mind, the minimal awareness that there is perhaps something one cannot be absolutely certain about, is the one thing that opens one to the places God may lead us.  In the story of the Publican and the Pharisee (Luke 18:9-14), we read that the Pharisee prayed "with himself," while the Publican's position of humility at least allows for the possibility that there is something he has to learn, something left undone, something God calls him to that he doesn't know.  To be at least capable of changing one's mind means that God's work within us is still possible, and we know that this is important because -- especially in our recent readings -- Jesus has emphasized God the Father's role in drawing us to Christ (see above, "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand").  In yesterday's reading, Jesus also said, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." Without the possibility of "changing our minds," of allowing for the unknown and unexpected, how would we hear Christ's voice?  For God will always call us to what is greater than we know, what we haven't considered, or perhaps especially what we need to reconsider in our own choices and behaviors.  For God will always be asking us to grow, leading us forward into what is greater than what we think we know.  Even the works that Christ does, those "signs" such as healing a man blind from birth, ask of us to open our own minds to accept them, and especially to accept what they mean about Christ's divine identity, and the kingdom of God present with Him.  Let us consider what it is to witness, and how we receive that witness.  For how will we be prepared to understand and accept the evidence that is before us?

Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard.  And a servant girl came to him, saying, "You also were with Jesus of Galilee."  But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are saying."  And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth."  But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!"  And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you."  Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man!"  Immediately a rooster crowed.  And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."  So he went out and wept bitterly.

Yesterday we read that those who had laid hold of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.  But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest's courtyard.  And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.  Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the councils sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.  Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none.  But at last two false witnesses came forward and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.'"  And the high priest arose and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing?  What is it these men testify against You?"  But Jesus kept silent.  And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God:  Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!"  Jesus said to him, "It is as you said.  Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."  Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy!  What further need do we have of witnesses?  Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!  What do you think?"  They answered and said, "He is deserving of death."  Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ!  Who is the one who struck You?"

And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth."  But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!"  And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you."  Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man!"  Immediately a rooster crowed.  And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."  So he went out and wept bitterly.  Peter is so overcome with fear, my study Bible notes, that through these three people questioning him as to his relation to Christ, he did not recall Christ's prediction nor come to repentance.  But the crow of the rooster causes him to remember.  As St. Luke reports this story, it is the gaze of Christ from within the home of the high priest which causes him to weep bitterly (Luke 22:61-62).  

Let us note that Peter's denial of Christ is not a simple matter of simply staying silent and moving away, but the second time he's questioned, he actually denied knowing Christ with an oath.   The third time he's questioned, moreover, he began to curse and swear to make an even more vehement denial.   To our modern ears, these may seem like vehement embellishments of speech, emotionally digging himself in to make his denial seem more significant.  But in the Bible oaths and swearing are taken quite seriously, for these are seen as commitments one makes with one's word before the Lord.  Jesus has taught, in the Sermon on the Mount, "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.' But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one" (Matthew 5:33-37).  So, in a certain sense, Peter is not just simply denying knowing Christ, but he is even disobeying His commands to His disciples.  The other example we have in the Gospels of someone so carried away by his passions that he swears a rash oath, with disastrous consequences, is King Herod Antipas (see this reading).  So the denial of Christ by Peter is an occasion upon which we have to reflect what it means that Jesus teaches us not to swear at all, because our simple words must suffice for the power of truth.  So important is this understanding of our word and the importance of its truth, the Lord teaches us that swearing and oaths are vain -- and more than "Yes" or "No" is from the evil one.  Clearly Peter's emotions have put him in a place where he's without the balance to even recall Christ's words to him earlier in the evening, and so this becomes a cautionary tale to us.  If even the great St. Peter, leader among the apostles, can be so easily thrown off his guard and fail to remember his devotion to Christ, then what about the rest of us?  Let's recall Peter's words to Jesus earlier in this evening:  "Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble," and, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" (see Matthew 26:31-35).  There's another essential, important lesson we can learn from Peter's denial, and that is in his tremendous capacity for humility.  We recall the powerful rebuke given to him by Jesus, when Peter protested that Jesus should not die:  "Get behind Me, Satan!" (see Matthew 16:22-24).  Can we imagine such a word from Christ, in front of the rest of the disciples?  And yet, Peter did not turn away, but accepted.  From this humiliating and bitter failure, Peter will also return to the disciples, and for his true repentance be also specifically forgiven and received by Christ.  So, in the telling of this story, we also have St. Peter's saving humility, inseparable from his capacity for repentance, and from his genuine love of Christ.  But we're taught, also, not to trust in ourselves to the point that we're unaware of our own vulnerabilities and weakness under strain.  Let us once again consider how Christ teaches us the true power of our word, to be aware of the things we swear, the heat of the moment, and the challenges to our honor or standing in front of others.  Let us, indeed, endeavor to remember to keep it simple.  The capacity for humility is perhaps the greatest tool we have for saving grace, for finding our way through the difficult struggles and pressures we encounter in life, and in the carrying of our cross of faith.

You are not also one of His disciples, are you?

 
 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple.  Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.  But Peter stood at the door outside.  Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.  
 
Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?"  He said, "I am not."  Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves.  And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.  

The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.  Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world.  I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and  in secret I have said nothing.  Why do you ask Me?  Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them.  Indeed they know what I said."  And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?"  Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?"  Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.  

Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself.  Therefore they said to him, "You are not also one of His disciples, are you?"  He denied it and said, "I am not!"  One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?"  Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed.

 On Saturday, we were reading in St. John's Chapter 8, when Jesus was at the Feast of Tabernacles.  After disputing with the religious leaders, Jesus said to them, "He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God."  Then the Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?"  Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.  And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges.  Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death."  Then the Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon!  Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, 'If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.'  Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead?  And the prophets are dead.  Who do You make Yourself out to be?"  Jesus answered, "If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing.  It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God.  Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him.  And if I say, 'I do not know Him,' I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word.  Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."  Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"  Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."  Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
 
  And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple.  Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.  But Peter stood at the door outside.  Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.  Our lectionary goes to a new point in St. John's Gospel, skipping over several chapters from our last reading.  This is because, in the West, this week is the beginning of Lent.  (This year Eastern Orthodox Easter will come one month after Western Easter.  This is because, in the Eastern Orthodox calculation, Easter must take place after Passover, in accordance with the events of Christ's Crucifixion and Resurrection as reported in the Gospels.)  So our readings for this work form a sort of interim period, introducing us to Lent in a sense, and a week from today will begin readings from St. Mark's Gospel.  Here in today's reading, we're given the experience of St. Peter at the time of Jesus' trial in the home of the high priest.  Here, my study Bible tells us, the other disciple spoken of is John, the author of this Gospel.  It was a common practice, as author, to conceal one's own name in the details of one's story (see John 13:23; compare Mark 14:51-52; Luke 24:13, 18).  
 
Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?"  He said, "I am not."  Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves.  And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.  My study Bible comments that a girl being the first to test Peter is an icon of the temptation of Adam by Eve (Genesis 3:6).  This fallen state is overcome in Christ, it tells us, when a woman is the first to hear, believe, and proclaim the Resurrection (John 20:1, 11-18).  

The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.  Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world.  I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and  in secret I have said nothing.  Why do you ask Me?  Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them.  Indeed they know what I said."  And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?"  Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?"  Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.   The lectionary skips over this section of the Gospel, focusing on the story of Peter in this context.  But it is useful to include this passage as context and backdrop to Peter's story, Here, the questioning of the high priest is meant as an attempt to uncover subversive activity that would not only violate the Law of Moses, my study Bible says, but be reason enough to accuse Jesus of a political crime before Pilate.  The two points of question put to Jesus pertain to His disciples and His doctrine, which my study Bible describes as two essential components of Christ and His Church.  
 
 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself.  Therefore they said to him, "You are not also one of His disciples, are you?"  He denied it and said, "I am not!"  One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?"  Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed.  After his three denials here in today's reading, my study Bible says, Peter will be restored through his three affirmations of love following the Resurrection (John 21:15-17). 
 
Today's story of Peter's denials would not be complete without also understanding Christ's warning to him about this very event.  This takes place at the Last Supper, just prior to Jesus' arrest.  In John 13:36-38, Peter declares he will lay down his life for Christ's sake, and Jesus responds by saying to him, "Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times."  Today's text gave us the story of Peter's three denials before he heard the rooster's crow.  Sts. Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell us of Peter's tears upon realizing what he has done (Matthew 26:75; Mark 14:72; Luke 22:62).  Perhaps St. John, out of compassion, spares us the vision of Peter weeping over his failure.  But what we really find repeatedly with Peter is his own exuberance that gets in the way and forms a stumbling block for him.  It's a reminder that our faith can't rely simply on an emotional attachment or enthusiasm, but must run more deeply within us, and in a sober place.  Just before Jesus predicts Peter's betrayal, He washes the disciples' feet at the Last Supper.  When He chooses to do so, Peter at first refuses, saying to Jesus, "You shall never wash my feet!"  Jesus tells Peter, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."  To which Peter then replies, in complete turnabout, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!"  But Jesus corrects him yet again, telling him, "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you" (referring to His betrayer, Judas).  It is Peter's emotionalism that forms a stumbling block to real obedience.  Even directly after Peter's confession of faith that Jesus is the Christ, in Matthew 16, when Jesus first predicts His death and Resurrection to the disciples, we're told that Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!"  At that time Jesus replied to Peter, saying, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."  Jesus then emphasizes to all the disciples that if anyone wishes to follow Him, one must take up one's own cross in imitation of Him.  See Matthew 16:21-28. We may each be tempted to substitute for faith a kind of emotional exuberance.  But our journey of faith in Christ is not like being at a football game, where our emotions are stirred up to root for our team.  As with St. Peter's denial three times, what we witness is how easily such a basis for faith withers and falls apart.  And this is perhaps the best possible introduction to Lent, and the historical practices of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer that are associated with Lent.  These disciplines are, in fact, meant to do just that:  to strengthen us in the discipline of faith.  That is, our faith (our trust in Christ) has to follow a pattern of dealing with the realities we're given, including the temptations of our lives in the world.  Emotionalism alone cannot sustain that.  Instead, we're given tools so that we learn to say "No" to what is not really good for us, to draw lines and healthy boundaries, and above all to have the kind of discipline that sets us on an even keel, so that we aren't swayed by every emotional upheaval that confronts us in life.  Note that we are asked, also, to know ourselves in this journey (or perhaps we should say to come to know ourselves better as we go),  Most of all, in the history of the Church, the prime concern of such discipline was in dealing with what are called the passions.  That is, those great emotions that can cause so much upheaval and sway us from one place to another, easily dominating our better judgment and our thinking.  Passions such as anger, for example, or despair, for another, can cause us to go out on an emotional limb, forgetting our trust in Christ in the moment.  Fear and panic can easily do the same.  The disciplines of Lent, then, are ways to develop our capacity to say "No" even to the things that seem to be deeply a part of us, like our habits of anger or despair, perhaps even extreme anxiety or depression, so that even though we may feel these things, we are not swept under with them.  We can remember to anchor ourselves in Christ as the One in whom we trust, and upon whom we ultimately rely.  This is the power of Lent, to teach us that we are capable of growing in our faith, and in our likeness to Christ, for this is what He came into the world to do for us and to give us, so that we recognize more truly that He is with us and within us.  In this context, we may look to the portion of our reading in which is included the night trial of Christ at the home of the high priest.  For He is the model we're given in contrast to Peter.  Jesus remains true to His mission and what He must testify, regardless of the corruption and pressure of those who seek to entrap Him.  His humility and obedience to the Father are paramount.  As we embark upon this Lent, consider the practices that are historically a part of the Church, and consider what it is we build up and grow as we give of ourselves.  As Jesus taught in Matthew 16, after rebuking St. Peter:  "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it."  Peter will return to Christ and the rest of the disciples after this night of his denials, and he will grow into the "Rock" of faith he was named by Christ.  Let us seek the grace that allows and enables that to happen, as we pay our own honor to the wisdom of our faith and its historical practices.  Let us also remember the role of humility that was so needful in Peter, and remains so necessary to us and our contemporaries.

 Yesterday we read that the arresting soldiers led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes.  But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.  And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.   Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.  For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.  Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, "We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.'"  But not even then did their testimony agree.  And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, "Do You answer nothing?  What is it these men testify against You?"  But He kept silent and answered nothing Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"  Jesus said, "I am.  And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven."  Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "What further need do we have of witnesses?  You have heard the blasphemy!  What do you think?"  And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.  Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, "Prophesy!"  And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.

Today's reading gives us a good lesson in humility, and does so on a number of levels.  First of all, there is the story of Peter himself, de facto leader and spokesman among the disciples for so much of Christ's ministry and of the early Church.  And yet it is the great Peter who suffers this humiliation and failure in his own eyes and from the word of his own mouth.  While we're told that all the disciples followed Peter in affirming that they would willingly die with Christ before they would deny Him (Mark 14:29-31), it is Peter himself who gives the lie to his own affirmation by denying Christ three times in that early morning while Christ is inside the high priest's home, being tried and convicted by the Council.  Peter's bitter tears express his recognition of this humiliating defeat of his own best intentions, and his own belief in himself and in his faith, which has failed him.  We could say that the great humiliation is in the fact that he failed himself, even though Christ told him this would come to pass.  There is another level of humiliation in that Peter himself was such an important disciple and an icon of faith among them.  So often chosen by Christ as part of His closest circle, such as at the Transfiguration, and the healing of Jairus' daughter, Peter has now in effect let them all down through his denial.  Finally, there is the greater circle as witness to this humiliation, and that is all those who hear and read the Gospel, and will continue to do so.  For our faith includes this story for all of us to read, as it is a great teaching for all of us.  It is just as equally powerfully a story of Peter's own humility, in that wherever the gospel is preached so is this story included about the great disciple St. Peter, named "Rock" by Christ for his faith.  Can we possibly imagine the tremendous humility it took for such a person to bear this story about himself everywhere the Church would go, everywhere the gospel message would go?  Peter, in effect, through this failure, teaches us all about how humility and faith go hand in hand.  For Peter's own restoration to the Church (Mark 16:7), and special mission given by Christ after the Resurrection, depends upon both humility and faith (John 21:15-19).  Indeed, it is Peter who so often is chastised by Christ in part because of his enthusiasm, as he rushes in with his heart where wisdom will correct him.  This happens most vividly when Peter tries to dissuade Jesus from going to His death, as Peter suffers a tremendous rebuke:  "Get behind Me, Satan!"  (Mark 8:33), but that incident is one among others.  Possibly one of the most ironic comes just after Peter's full restoration, as reported by John in the final verses of his Gospel, as Peter then turns around and must ask Christ about someone else's work to do.  He's told by the Resurrected Christ then, "What is that to you?  You follow Me" (see John 21:20-25).  The fullness of the experiences of Peter given to us tell us of the exceptional nature both of his faith and of his humility, for he had to withstand repeated corrections and personal failures, and yet continue in his faith.  And this, we might conclude, is what effectively makes for great leadership, at least in this man so capable of deep feeling as well as his own errors.  What we learn from Peter is that in every defeat we may find the seeds of our own "resurrection" if we have the humility to do so, and to turn to Christ in that humility.  Peter shows us effectively how essential humility really is to true greatness, for it is only in real humility that we can accept what is true, despite our own bitter tears at our own mistaken failures.

Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest's house.  But Peter followed at a distance.  Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.  And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, "This man was also with Him."  But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."  And after a little while another saw him and said, "You also are of them."  But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"  Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."  But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying!"  Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."  So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.  When He came to the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation."  And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."  Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.  And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly.  Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.  When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow.  Then He said to them, "Why do you sleep?  Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation."  And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.  But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"  When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"  And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.  But Jesus answered and said, "Permit even this."  And He touched his ear and healed him.  
 
  Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?  When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me.  But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."  Especially in John's Gospel, we get images of light corresponding to Christ, to God, and to the power of God working within and through human beings.  Darkness here is symbolic of all that rejects that light.  My study Bible refers us to Christ's words to Nicodemus:  "And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God" (John 3:19-21).

Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."  So Peter went out and wept bitterly.  My study Bible notes that Peter is so overcome with fear that neither the prediction of Jesus at the Last Supper (Luke 22:34) nor the crowing of the rooster calls him to repentance.  Only the gaze of the Lord causes him to weep bitterly.  Nonetheless, comments St. Ambrose of Milan, "through tears, what cannot be defended can be purged, for tears wash away the offense which is shameful to confess out loud."

If we take St. Ambrose's commentary seriously, we understand him to be saying something profound about human tears.  It is frequently asserted within Orthodox spiritually and the monastic tradition that tears are the surest sign of repentance.  No doubt this is drawn at least partially from this memorable example of St. Peter and his bitter tears.  But psychologically, we can also understand something deeper about the nature of tears and the state of our being:  tears frequently are a sign of truth being told.  Often, in popular culture, one may see a recording of a person purporting to confess repentance for something, and people will point out that they see no tears, even though one may see what is meant to be understood as crying.  Moreover, even if it is not a personal sin being repented, but a recollection of something true that happened which gave birth to some form of trauma, or a difficult truth is being faced and told, tears will also make their appearance -- giving once again witness to truth.  There are times when tears will accompany a recognition of great joy, overwhelming beauty, or transformational change for which we are deeply grateful.  In each case, the tears form themselves as involuntary witnesses to truth being recognized.  In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, prayer ropes are used for the repetition of the Jesus Prayer.  These will frequently have tassels attached to them; it is said that the tassel is for the wiping away of the tears of repentance.   But let us focus on St. Peter and his bitter tears of repentance, for these are the way that St. Peter has come to terms with himself, and with his own failing as he has come to know it.  To understand it truly, we have to reread Luke 22:31-34, the verses that tell us about his interaction with Jesus.  Jesus first warned Peter -- on behalf of all of the disciples -- that Satan wanted to "sift" them "as wheat."  But He said to Peter, "I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."  Peter's response was to declare to Jesus, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death."  In today's reading, Peter comes to recognize not simply his failure to live up to these words, but his own unawareness of himself and his own weaknesses.  Far from this image he no doubt had of himself at the time, in this experience he is defeated even by the gaze of a servant girl, and denies being a follower of Christ three times.  The bitterness of the tears is the truth of his recognition of himself, including the weakness Christ fully recognized when He admonished all of the disciples -- and particularly Peter -- to pray so as not to fall into temptation.  The truth we are given here in the Gospel of Luke, however, is not just about Peter, but about all of us.  How often do we disappoint ourselves with weakness?  How do we come to terms with the recognition of our own sad failings, even as we wish -- and even if we believe -- we are different?  Our faith does not task us with the impossible, but serves us here in the Gospel and elsewhere where this story is recounted the truth about who we are as human beings, and about those who would go on to become truly great in their full service to Christ.   Ultimately, we do not know the full history of St. Peter's life.  In one apocryphal tradition, the story of St. Peter's death is one of crucifixion -- and in his humility, asking to be crucified upside down, not considering himself worthy of being crucified in the same manner as Christ.  In this understanding, the man who bragged and failed had become humble indeed, and fully heroic in his humility.  It is a teaching for us all in the image of this man who would become a leader among the disciples, that it is ultimately his repentance and humility which made him great.  At the Last Supper, Jesus taught the disciples that "he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves" (Luke 22:26).  At the end of John's Gospel, Jesus prophesies Peter's eventual death by first telling him, "Feed My Sheep.  Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish," adding, "Follow Me" (John 21:17-19).  In today's reading, Peter's bitter tears teach us about this lesson learned, and it is one for each of us.

If I tell you, you will by no means believe. And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go

 
 Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest's house.  But Peter followed at a distance.  Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.  And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, "This man was also with Him."  But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."  And after a little while another saw him and said, "You also are of them."  But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"  Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."  But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying!"  Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crowed, you will deny Me three times."  So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.  And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, "Prophesy!  Who is the one who struck You?"  And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.  

As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, "If You are the Christ, tell us."  But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will by no means believe.  And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.  Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God."

Yesterday we read that, coming out from the Last Supper with His disciples, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.  When He came to the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation."  And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done."  Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.  And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly.  Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.  When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow.  Then He said to them, "Why do you sleep?  Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation."  And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.  But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"  When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"  And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.  But Jesus answered and said, "Permit even this."  And He touched his ear and healed him.  Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?  When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me.  But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."
 
 Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest's house.  But Peter followed at a distance.  Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.  And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, "This man was also with Him."  My study Bible comments here that a girl being the first to test Peter is an icon of the temptation of Adam by Eve (Genesis 3:6).  It notes that our fallen state is overcome in Christ when women are the first to hear, believe, and proclaim the Resurrection (Luke 24:1-10).

But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."  And after a little while another saw him and said, "You also are of them."  But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"  Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."  But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying!"  Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crowed, you will deny Me three times."  So Peter went out and wept bitterly.  My study Bible remarks that Peter is so overcome with fear that neither Christ's prediction at the Last Supper ('I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me" - Luke 22:34), nor the crowing of the rooster, calls him to repentance.  Only the Lord's gaze causes him to weep bitterly.   My study Bible quotes St. Ambrose of Milan, who comments that nonetheless, "through tears, what cannot be defended can be purged, for tears wash away the offense which is shameful to confess out loud."

Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.  And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, "Prophesy!  Who is the one who struck You?"  And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.   St. Cyril of Alexandria remarks upon the patience of Christ, on display in these verses in Luke.  To be mocked and beaten means the One who is above all endures the worst of the corruption of the world, showing that "human things fall as far below the divine excellencies as our nature is inferior to His."  Christ's patience and endurance shows a marked difference between His nature (and is one of the fruits of the Spirit) and our own, which so easily responds savagely to anything that disturbs us.  St. Cyril writes, "He who tries hearts and minds and is the giver of all prophecy, how could He not know who hit him? As Christ said, 'Darkness has blinded their eyes, and their minds are blinded.'"  See Isaiah 6:8-10, John 12:40

As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, "If You are the Christ, tell us."  But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will by no means believe.  And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go."  My study Bible comments that Jesus asked many questions of the Jewish leaders which they refused to answer because doing so would have meant confessing Him as the Christ (Luke 20:4-7; Matthew 22:41-46; Mark 3:4). 
 
"Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God."  By this claim, my study Bible tells us, Jesus declares Himself to be equal with God.

The leaders of the Jews, assembled in the official council, demand of Jesus to know:  "If You are the Christ, tell us."  Jesus responds in the following way:  "If I tell you, you will by no means believe.  And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.  Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God."   It's interesting to consider His response, for He tells us, in so many words, of the silence and forbearance He expressed during the time He was beaten and mocked in such crude ways by those with no understanding or spiritual insight.   This is the manifestation of the truth of what He said when He was seized: "But this is your hour, and the power of darkness" (see yesterday's reading, above).  His forbearance, His lack of speaking out or even answering their demand to know if He is the Christ (which He has already indicated many times and in many ways during His ministry) is an expression of the fact that darkness prevails not simply in this circumstance, but rather in the minds and hearts of these men.  They have all kinds of witnesses they could call. They know of His many signs He has done during His ministry.  They understand the response of the people to Christ.  And they have heard His doctrine and He has answered their questions openly, before the whole public at the feasts, the whole of the nation not only in His travels but at the feasts for all of Jerusalem and the pilgrims from everywhere in the Jewish diaspora who come to attend the festivals.  John's Gospel gives us three Passovers in which Jesus returns to Jerusalem, and other festivals as well.  But here and now what we observe is what St. Cyril comments, as we noted above, that "darkness has blinded their eyes, and their minds are blinded."  This is taken from the prophesy of Isaiah about the response to the Messiah, which Jesus quoted in the Gospels, and which was also quoted by St. Paul preaching in Rome (see Isaiah 6:9-10; Matt 13:14; Mark 4:12; John 12:40, Acts 28:26).  We have often heard Jesus say, for example after preaching the parable of the Sower, "He who has ears, let him hear!"  (Matthew 13:9, Mark 4:9, Luke 8:8), and this we also understand as part of the allusions to the prophesy of Isaiah as noted.  When we have entered into a kind of darkness that is deliberate blindness, that refuses to listen and to understand, to see and to know, then we embark on a path that leads to a place where we may render ourselves incapable of repentance.  We can come to be incapable of changing our minds, of understanding, of growth.  And that is where these men are, and that is why we witness the silence and forbearance of Christ, because there is no longer any point in speaking to them.  They are beyond His salvation by virtue of their own closed minds.  He issues one more warning that judgment will come for their failures:  "Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God."   There is no turning back from this place for them.  And so, we enter into the subject of the power of darkness.  Earlier in Luke's Gospel, Jesus taught, "The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness" (Luke 11:34).  In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says, "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.  But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Matthew 6:22-23).  The Gospels, and the teachings of Christ therein, are consistent on this subject of spiritual darkness.  It is the power of evil, and darkness is synonymous with the evil one.  It is the absence of light, meaning the kind of illumination that Christ's truth brings, for Christ Himself is the light (John 1:4-5).  When we read this scene, we witness that the power of darkness is at work, for Jesus no longer attempts to persuade and to save, He forbears His mocking and beating, and displays the tremendous patience of One who has accepted that speech will do no good, for understanding is not possible in people who have chosen to remain in darkness, when so much light is part of their heritage and is present in the One who stands before them, the "Light of Light, and true God of true God" (Creed).  When we experience times of great evil, when comprehension is obliterated, when people refuse to see what is before them, when darkness becomes embraced and deepened, then we understand this place, this force that is against Jesus and hates the light.  It is important that we understand that all evils feed and are symptomatic of this darkness, especially lies, and those forms of depravity and senseless violence and destruction we may see around us every day, particularly in those who, like these corrupt leaders in today's reading, cynically use violence simply for their personal ends, and cultivate lies to justify it.  Let us consider what it means to enter into the hour and power of darkness, and how many times we might experience that or witness it in our lives and in our world.  For it remains in opposition to the Light.  As our response, we can choose to bring our faith further into the world, to live His teachings more diligently, to grow in the light He gives us.  For this is our work, the job He gives us, as He teaches:  "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).  As we now approach the celebration of the coming of that Light into the world, let us remember how important, how crucial it is, that our lives are found in His light.  Let us not deny that light, but work to help bring it into a world which so deeply and truly needs it.

Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard.  And a servant girl came to him, saying, "You also were with Jesus of Galilee."  But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are saying."  And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth."  But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!"  And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you."  Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man!"   Immediately a rooster crowed.  And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."  So he went out and wept bitterly.

Yesterday we read that those who had laid hold of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.  But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest's courtyard.  And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.  Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.  Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none.  But at last two false witnesses came forward and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.'"  And the high priest arose and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing?  What is it these men testify against You?"  But Jesus kept silent.  And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God:  Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!"  Jesus said to him, "It is as you said.  Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."  Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy!  What further need do we have of witnesses?  Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!  What do you think?"  They answered and said, "He is deserving of death."  Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ!  Who is the one who struck You?"

And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth."  But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!"  And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you."  Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man!"   Immediately a rooster crowed.  And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."  So he went out and wept bitterly.  My study Bible comments that in this scenario in the courtyard, Peter is so overcome with fear that Christ's earlier prediction (see Matthew 26:31-35, especially verse 34) does nothing to make him aware of what he is doing until he hears the crowing of the rooster, and he remembers Christ's word.  In St. Luke's version of these events, it is only the gaze of Christ that calls Peter back to remembrance (Luke 22:61-62).  His remembrance causes him to weep bitterly.  St. Ambrose of Milan comments that nevertheless, "through tears, what cannot be defended can be purged, for tears wash away the offense which is shameful to confess out loud."

Peter weeps, purging his sin in true repentance, and realizing the truth of what he had done.  We recall his words to Christ on the night Christ predicted all the disciples would be made to stumble because of Him:   "Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble," and "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" (Matthew 26:33, 35).  These declarations, although vehement, in the end did nothing to prevent just such a scenario from happening.  Peter's own weakness is on display to himself, his denial plainly a denial of his own vulnerability and fears, and thus he weeps bitterly at having realized what he's done.  But Peter is our picture of courage and strength nonetheless.  He is a leader among the apostles.  We know his weaknesses and his exuberance.  In John's Gospel, Peter first declares to Jesus at the Last Supper, "You shall never wash my feet!"  But when Jesus tells him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me," Peter changes altogether, and demands, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" (John 13:3-9).  When Jesus first predicts His own death, Peter declares, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!"  We understand Peter's denials in this case, but it simply leads to a stunning rebuke by Jesus:  "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men" (see Matthew 16:21-23).  In the end of John's Gospel, Peter is directed by Jesus what he should do, and even given a preview of his courageous death.  But then he goes on to ask what the beloved disciple, John, must do, saying, "But Lord, what about this man?"  Jesus answers him by asking, "What is that to you?  You follow Me"  (see John 21:15-25).  In so many examples in the Gospels, Peter is the one, although a leader among the Twelve, and certainly a leader to come after Christ's death, who shows the weaknesses of human beings, our fallibilities, the one who stumbles through exuberance and emotion.  And yet, Peter is the one who comes to terms with his own failure in humility, recognizing how he has stumbled and disappointed himself.   In Peter we find both greatness and humility, the capacity for leadership of the fledgling Church that would soon spread to the entire known world, and yet the humility to be corrected.  And perhaps it is just this humility that gave Peter his greatest strength, for he is the one who could endure a rebuke of Christ and persist, and remain true to his calling despite Christ's prediction of Peter's own death by crucifixion (John 21:18-19).  I can speak for no one but myself, but I would venture to say that many (if not all) of us have parts of ourselves of which we're ashamed or embarrassed, aspects of weakness and vulnerability we'd not care to see nor to admit.  But Peter's strength is in acceptance of this truth about himself, even if accompanied by bitter tears.  For it enables him repeatedly to return to Christ, to find correction in repentance, to carry on and to manifest his position as leader in the early Church, "first among equals."  Let us find also his courage and humility, and his capacity for turning back to Christ, for it is a saving grace, the strength that restores us to our proper relation to Christ when we've stumbled.

Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?  When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me.  But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."  Throughout the readings of last week, in which the events of Christ's betrayal and arrest were given, the text clearly marks the ultimate culprit for this plot of Christ's death.  That culprit is Satan; that is, the one whose influence is the power of darkness, who works through the weaknesses, temptations, and passions of human beings.  Regarding "darkness" see John 3:19-21, 13:30.

Peter wept bitterly at the realization of his own failure.  At the Last Supper (that is, the Passover supper which Jesus had eaten with His disciples just prior to His arrest in the garden of Gethsemane), Jesus warned Peter, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."  (See Friday's reading.)  Peter replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death."  But Jesus told him, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me."  Peter has let himself down, despite his great protestation to Jesus that he was ready to go with Him, both to prison and to death.  The bitter tears are his response to the realization that his fear has kept him even from admitting to a servant girl that he is a follower of Christ.  But Peter's bitter tears give him a chance again at something.  They give him a chance to repent and to return to his brothers and sisters in the Church, to return to Christ.  Jesus says, tellingly, "But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren."  There is a role for Peter to play, and even this failure will not stop his faith.  Of course, we know that he did return and resumed his role as a leader among the apostles and the early church.  This great example of the apostle who would go on to serve and lead gives to us an important teaching for all.  Peter has his weaknesses, and they are on full display throughout the Gospels.  His exuberance often causes him to overestimate his capacity for strength, but his faith will be steadfast, and he will die a martyr.  Indeed, even in the words Jesus said after Peter declared he would go to prison and die for Him, Jesus affirms that he has prayed for the strength of Peter's faith and that Peter must use this faith to come back and strengthen his brethren (and by inference the whole of the Church).  St. Ambrose comments insightfully that Peter would not have followed Christ to the home of the high priest -- even though he was clearly fearful -- if he was not devoted to Christ in the first place.  But his denial comes as the result of sudden temptation.  St. Ambrose compares Peter to King David, who writes, "Now in my prosperity I said, 'I shall never be moved,'" but then  admits that his boasting had harmed him, writing, "You hid Your face, and I was troubled" (Psalm 30:6-7).  Peter had boasted of his conviction and courage, but at Jesus' glance realizes he has let himself down.  St. Ambrose writes, "At that same moment and time, Christ looks at you. If you perhaps fall into some sin, because he is a witness to your secrets, he looks at you so that you may recall and confess your error. Imitate Peter, when he says in another place for the third time, 'Lord, you know that I love you'" (see John 21:15-19).  If great figures of our faith show us the effect of temptation, then let each one of us have the humility to remember this before we ourselves boast.  King David and Peter are also figures who resemble one another as each would help to lead the world to Christ, to be examples of faith and devotion.  Let us not forget that where we love Christ, there the Gospel story also reminds us that we will be tempted, having repeated throughout the readings for this week that it is forces of spiritual evil (in the figure of Satan) who work to harm the faithful and thereby the Church.  This is the power of darkness at work through human beings, and our weaknesses, temptations, and passions.  Peter's temptation is attributed to his fear of death in patristic commentary, where it is noted that Christ has not yet died nor risen.  The Gospel gives us Peter's tremendous example which shows our own need for humility, our capacity for repentance, and the love that is restored to us with Christ.  All of these things must be in Christ's eyes when He turned and looked at Peter.  Let us not forget it is all there, too, including His love, when He turns and looks at us.
